When is it a good idea to 3bet? I seem to do it with my good but vulnerable hands which I'm not sure is ideal or not. It seems like the only time they get called preflop is by AA and on the flop is by the near nuts.

This one was bad by me, I should have smooth called since I had position but my hand was vulnerable - I thought I could get a call by a lower flush but it didn't work out.

Keep in mind I'm talking about 3betting not just reraising. So that means I raise someone reraises me - its pretty dangerous to come back over the top at this point preflop with a hand like TT/JJ or AK.

Oh, never mind then. This is such a tough question to answer because it's so dependent on who the re-raiser is.

The situation you described is a 4bet. 3bet is somebody bets, another raise and then the next raise is a 3bet. Preflop if its raised and you reraise thats also a 3bet.

To answer your question I think we need a lot more information about these hands, reads and stats on villain are essential.

Assume villains are standard tags who aren't really getting out of line. I am asking if these are good situations to 3bet or if its best to just smooth call and hope to extract more on later streets but also open myself up to getting drawn out on.

Renton will become famous soon enough
you bet 3bet the flop when you know your ahead but you don't want to see the turn.

I bet 3bet when the following conditions are filled:

A. I am almost sure I will have the best of it, or close to it if we get all in on this flop.

B. There are a lot of turns/rivers that can ruin my action.

C. My villain is loose enough to call with hands I beat, or is on a draw of some kind.

D. My villain has some reason to believe I might have a draw (consider flop texture), or if I am almost sure that he's sure that he has the best hand.

I like your way of thinking.

I don't like some of those 3-bets in andrews post.
