Note taking is something I've been meaning to do this for some time now, and I'm just getting around to it. Do any of you guys have any tips on how to take quick, but readable notes on players? I've seen some before, but there so short-handed, I can barely understand what I wrote down. Any help will be appreciated... Thanks

For quick notes I just jot down any significantly huge amount of bets they raised with preflop and then show what hand they raised with, how they reacted to when they were reraised or something.
Say a guy plays pocket 5's all the way till the river even with KQ or A on the board, thats definately worth noting.
Other things you can type is classifying the type of player he is, LAG (loose aggressive), TAG (tight aggressive), or elephant, mouse respectively in Phil Hellmuths terms.
Sometimes a simple "fish" or "noob" works as well.
For detailed notes, you would need pokertracker and then I would put in any significant betting patterns the player has, how many times he sees the flop, flop won at showdown %, etc.

I tend to just write things like "pushed all in w/92o" or "calling station" or "overvalues low poicket pairs" or "good player, slowplay, check/raises a lot." I'll take 3 or 4 notes like that on someone, take down a few examples of hands they've played.

I just found this old post but wanted to point out a good site which has probably already been referenced. It has a good note taking primer as follows http://teamfu.freeshell.org/player_notes.html
maybe xianti can make the link work if deemed helpful??

When making notes, I usually use specifics.
"Called 3-bet with 65s"
"Raised 5XBB with AJo"
"Re-raised with inside straight draw"
Stuff like that. It helps me identify people a little better.
But I have seen very complex systems. I'm sure they work better, but it takes a while to put those in place and come up with that much info. Studying Poker Tracker would be close to the only way.

I don't know what they have to say
It makes no difference anyway.
Whatever it is...
I'm against it.

Hi All
After a couple of weeks spent merely reading on this site, I thought it about time to grace it with my (written) presence, so here goes...
IMHO - I think u should find a system that suits u. After all, u are not getting marked on the notes u take, so u should scribble down anything that u think will come in useful, but in a style that suits and best serves u.
I personally use a similar style to Montimus because I think it isn't necessary accurate to take notes on one specific hand, but after u have sat on a table (either SnG or MTT) with a player for a while, u have a good idea of....
whether they are loose or tight
how they play the big hands when they get them
how they play the middle pp's
how they play when short-stacking
how they play when they have a mountain of chips in front of them
whether they bet out flush/straight draws or whether they prefer to wait-and-see
how easily they go on tilt
etc......
This is the kind of info that u will need when u encounter them again, days and weeks later.
Hope this helps
