Lee,
I am an avid Pokerstars player and I have a few questions for you.
1.. Why do you hate me so much? I don’t remember offending you at any point in time. If I have though, please let me know so I can correct this misunderstanding.
2.. If you don’t really hate me, why all the horrible bad beats? I understand that AK can’t always win against AT….but…..10% of the time really isn’t working out that well.
3.. On that note, why do always set me up? Every time that I’m short-stacked and have to push Ax….someone always has AK in the big blind. Why is this? And why is it that their AK always holds??
4.. Why do open-ended-straight-flush-with-two-over-cards-draws never hit??
5.. Is the DoomSwitch real???
6.. Why the River???? It’s always the damn river.
7.. One of my good friends informed me that you have a special keyboard that you use. He said you randomly pull up tables and when there is a pre-flop all-in you hit the F keys to dictate how bad someone gets sucked out on…such as F3 for 3-outer, F2 for 2-outer, etc. Is this true??
8.. Can I please win all of my coinflips for just one week? Just one! I promise I’ll never ask again.
Please address these questions for me. I would really appreciate it.
Thank you,
James Duchnowksi

Hello James,
Lee doesn't handle these sorts of emails routinely, but I will be happy to try to address your concerns, and will copy him on the reply so he sees it.
Please understand up front that Lee holds nothing against you or any other player, and even if he did, there is nothing he could do about it. There are no doom switches, no controls at all on any account.
Our shuffle is completely random, favoring or disfavoring no player over any other. The computerized methods we use to shuffle the deck are more than sufficient to ensure complete randomization of the cards, and complete unpredictability of the cards to come. You can see the description of these methods at:
http://www.pokerstars.com/security.html
In addition, we track all hands dealt daily to see if there is any statistically significant variance.
In fact, we gave the source code to two independent auditors who reviewed our shuffle algorithm and found it sound and random. You may read the analyses of these auditors at:
http://www.pokerstars.com/rng_audit.html
We have dealt over 4,000,000,000 hands, and have freely given out real money hand histories any time somebody has requested them. Not once has anybody found any indication that our shuffle is not 100% random, and many who have undertaken such studies have posted their findings to the Internet. You may find just two of them here:
http://tinyurl.com/4lfeg
http://tinyurl.com/2nvav
You have received such histories from us in the past, and have perhaps even done some analysis on them. Did you find anything that was the least bit unusual? You've played 154,969 hands on PokerStars -- a complete analysis of these hands would certainly show any flaws in the dealing. If you want an updated set of hands for analysis, you can ask.
The answer to all these questions is those histories, but here's the short form answers:
- AK really does hold up as much as it should against Ax.
- Nothing at all is set up.
- You do hit your draws as often as you should.
- There is no doomswitch.
- Why the river? It's not always the river. When it is, it's memorable and interesting, but it happens there no more than it should.
- Lee has no special keyboard or special powers. (We like him anyway.)
- No, you can't win all of your coinflips for a week. That would not be real poker. It *could* happen, I suppose, but it's very unlikely.
I'm sure you've taken some bad beats. Everyone does. And maybe lately they've come at some bad times. But you've won a considerable amount of money on PokerStars, so it's hard to believe you really think it happens any more than it should. The edge that winning players have in poker is so razor-thin that even a 10-20% difference in win rates would destroy it.
I've attached a chart with every time you've been dealt AA, KK, QQ, JJ and AK in tournaments during the last month. Your success rates are AA 90.4%, KK 82.9%, QQ 78.5%, JJ 72.2%, AK 70.3%. These are all normal, and some are better than normal. You're simply not taking any more bad beats than you should.
Charts of your last month of straight draws and flush draws are attached, too. All are in the normal range. The Overcards report shows you're winning your share of coinflips: 60.2% with the pair, 49.2% with the overcards.
And finally, your All-Ins for the last month. All of them, when you or your opponent was all-in. You've won 599 of 1198 when you have been all- in, and 295 of 557 when your opponent was all-in. This is also normal, and you are welcome to go through and count all of the times you lost on the river.
When you're running bad, it's easy to feel like the world (or just Lee) is conspiring against you. It's not, and he isn't. Streaks are part of poker, and happen to even the greats. Daniel Negreanu played 40 events at the 2005 WSOP and didn't make even one final table. Did he play badly?
No. Was the Rio Hotel fixed against him? Of course not. Did he whine about it? A little. (Even on ESPN.) But he understands that this is just a streak. You or I would be happy to trade results with him for the last few years, and I'm pretty sure I could find 30,000 PokerStars players online right this moment who would be ecstatic to trade PokerStars results with you.
If you have further questions about this, please don't hesitate to contact us.
Regards,
Scott

stars support is almost too good for its own good. i'm almost mad at them for it, if that makes any sense. they're like a nerd that needs to be beaten up, or something.

lol Cool.
See where your rake goes?! Employing people like Scott, who obviously have so much free time at work they can write massive detailed responses to "poker is teh r1gg3d" emails!
(says someone who has so much free time at work they can rack up 300 posts on a poker forum!)
