Hello Everyone!
I'm new around here but think FTR is an invaluable resource in learning the game, especially as far as online play.
The question I have is---Is it worth spending time playing the Play Money tables to perfect the craft, or is it a waste of time? It seems to me that everyone plays maniac because they can turn around and get another stack. I use the play money tables to tweak my strategies, but get bad beat a lot by people who hang until the river just because they know they don't have anything to lose.
I don't take bad beats personally, and don't get tilt, but it seems to be a serious waste of time to try and play solid fundamental NL against such a climate.
When did you guys start playing the RM(real money)tables? Right away?
I'm probably a week or so off from having the stakes to start playing the micro-tables. Is this where I will get the best learning experience?

Play money tables are basically worthless. You seem to already know this, but if you're looking for more people to confirm that for you, you came to the right place.
I have found a play money game or two that isn't too bad. Usually happens when you get into a room with 2-4 other people, and everyone plays "for real." With saying that, though, there's no way to play "for real" since the money will NEVER be real.
Stay away from them, they're not good for your game.

First off play tables are definatly NOT the way to go if you want to improve your game. The only thing it can teach you is patience.
That being said UB at least makes play tables worth something.
You get UB Player Points for every hour your on a table, including play chip tables, at a max of 500 points per month. After you get the points take em to an SNG. Once you build up enough points you can buy into real money MTT's. It's a lot of work but once you get your foot in the door and you are a decent player building up your bankroll should be no sweat.

I couldn't imagine there being any advantage to the play money tables from a poker standpoint. I see the advantage being if you are new to a particular house and want to learn the software, the table setup, where everything is, etc.
It's kind of a double-edged sword; you're not ever going to play like you would at a 4/8 table, because nobody else is. (Why come in on only 14 - 16% of the flops if no money is at stake?)
Most of this has already been stated, and most of it you already realize; just adding my $.02

I'll just chime in too that play money tables not only not help you, they might hurt you when you move to real money tables, especially if you're playing for real at the play tables, trying to read people, etc.
I vote you save up a little and start out at Stars micro tables, unless someone knows of a better place.
Welcome to FTR, and it's been an invaluable place to learn for me too.

I spent alot of time playing on both play tables and micro limits. If I were to do it all over again I would skip the play tables and go strait to the micro limits. I personally think that the play tables can actually help your play some. I worked my way up to the maximum limit play money tables at Pokerroom and the game was comparable to the penny games at Stars. The best thing I think to do is to skip the play money tables and move strait to the penny or nickel games at Stars. The penny games are wild but they will give a feel for the game. The nickel games actually have somewhat decent play. Don't start at party or somewhere that only has $25 buy-ins and up because you might lose alot of money learning the ropes.

You could also use play money tables(briefly) when first using a new site to get used to their interface.
BTW, Lucid I have to say your avatar cracks me up You need to add some sort of caption like "Now where did I leave my keys?".

Thanks! That's Anna Kounakova btw. Ya, some people have funny avatars and some people have hot avatars, but I'm the only one that I know of that has an avatar that is both funny and hot.

Thanks to everyone who took the time to answer my questions and I look forward to being around all of you in the future. I have enjoyed forums immensly over the last few years and have benefited and contributed positively to all of them.
There are some great avatars around here---Lucid, TylerK, others!
I've had problems in the last day with my posts appearing then dissapearing. I'm not sure if this is due to the actions of a moderator, a glitch in the system, or a mistake on my end of the internet.....I mess stuff up sometimes so I have no idea. I hope I have not cause some official to be upset with me. If so I would like the opportunity to redeem myself.
Otherwise, again, thanks to everyone, and I look forward to learning and socializing with all of you in the future!
