My question is this, what really is a freeroll and when is a freeroll really free?
I have been to a lot of sites promoting freerolls but in order to participate you must make a deposit or play X number of raked hands etc. So should these still be classed as freerolls when in order to play in them you need to make a finacial commitment first? And if so shouldn't then freerolls that do not require any commitments then have a different name? freeroll freerolls...nah
I know it all boils down to marketing strategies but why must 'free' almost always seem to have a catch?
I love playing poker and I love the challenges of competition as in tournaments and it's a great way for poker rooms to attract more players but I wish they would distinguish between which are really free and those that are not.
I'm still refining the strategies of the game myself and because of that I have a tendency to lose my monthly 'poker allowance' pretty quick. Bad for me good for others in the room haha. So I fill in the month playing really free freerolls, which as stated above are not always what they seem to be.
Playing in the free poker rooms to me is almost like playing bingo. All in, all in. There is very little real poker being played because they just go get more play money when they lose. So they, to me, are not a great way to learn the strategies.

Been there, done that. They have real Freerolls on Absolute Poker that actually pay money. 1st place gets $18, not bad. But you gotta fight off 2000 people to get it, lol. They have them at all times of the day, even have Omaha ones.

Well, technically it is a freeroll if you don't pay money to get into it. At Party it's called a players club freeroll. I think empire has something similar. There are many many "true" freerolls online. You just have to look a little harder. Bodog, Absolute, Pokerchamps, RoyalVegas, Poker dot com (the biggest ones) to name a few. There's also a place called Freerollz dot com that lists them all conveniently.

It's not what's inside that counts. Have you seen what's inside?
Internal organs. And they're getting uglier by the minute.

Thanks for the replies guys.
And yup I found some more. Enough to fill my spare time now anyway.
It's just tough with many sites to figure out if they are free or have qualifications attached. I guess that's where the frustration comes in.
But I need to hone my poker skills some and I find them a reasonable help. I've even made a couple bucks by finishing 30th ( $1.50 ), 27th ( $2.00 ) and 13th ( $3.75 ). My problem seems now to be once I get into the money I seem to play not to lose instead of just playing poker. I become very tentitive which makes for a good mark for other players.
I think good poker players are like mosquitos. They can smell blood over long distances and arrive in a flash...hahaha
As they say for the NBA....I Love this Game.
Have fun all.

Keep in mind when you win freerolls, you usually can't withdraw the money or anything you have won by playing cash games with the winnings until you make a deposit at the site. This site has a good list of freerolls:

The best one that I play in is Bet365Poker has a $5000 freeroll every Saturday at like 1pm cst. There is no rake hand requirement so you can participate without every depositing. There are usually a lot of people in it (4000ppl or so) but the top 300 spots pay.
