Most players known that position is important in poker, but they aren’t aware of how critical it is early in the hand. Our guide to helping intermediate players get more out of their online poker game continues with a look at positioning around the poker table and the best cards to play based on the circumstances and information you’ve received.

It’s common knowledge that the first two or three players to act after the blind have to make tough decisions on what they’re going to play — they’re handing information over to players in the middle and latter positions. Players in the middle position get more flexibility, but don’t have the complete table knowledge that someone playing late in the hand receives. While early positions are urged to stick with strong pairs and hands like A-K, those in the middle can open up a bit and start playing 8-8 and 6-6 along with split hands like A-K and J-10.

If you’re playing late in the hand, you have a distinct advantage: you can see how much confidence has been put into the cards that have been played and can raise with slightly riskier cards that you’d throw back or call if you were in an earlier position: A-10, 9-8 and even 5-5 becomes playable when you’ve seen how the other players have handled themselves.
