I'm sure this has probably been done ad nauseam, but I just want to be sure nothing has changed recently, and get the most up to date answer I can.
I want to change my Stars FPPs into real world value. I think probably that buying items with them, and then selling them on eBay is about the least efficient use, so rule that out. Next there's the cash bonuses.
I'm unlikely to be able to get anything higher than the $50 VIP Reward Bonus, because I'll be playing at other sites, so if I'm to get the cash bonus, it's going to be $50 for 5,000. In other words 1 FPP is worth 1 cent.
The 70 FPP satellites have 700 FPP in the prize pool, but pay out 1100 cents (for me T$ are almost the same as real money). Assuming I have 0% ROI, 1 FPP is worth 1.57 cents, and I probably have better ROI than 0%.
Is there a better way that I don't know about?

I really, really, REALLY like the 280fpp 6-max sats to the 1/4 million. (Same tournament 70fpp sats into). Top 2 get a seat, 3rd gets another shot at it. Start with 10bb. Hone your p/f game and your ROI in these will be huge, and they don't take that long to play so you can get back on the grind asap.

I had a look at those, and if I'm calculating accurately, you make the same per FPP as with the 10 seat 70s, except the crapshooty structure favors skill less. The way I'm calculating is that if you have an ROI of 0%, you need to buy in 5 times to get $11 dollars twice, or 2200 / (280 * 5) = ~1.57 cents per FPP, which is the same. Surely a winning players ROI is better in deeper tourneys, no?
It seems the best dollar to FPP conversion is with the 500 FPP sats to the million, but my FPP roll isn't big enough to be playing those.

I don't play tournaments, so can't make any recommendations to that end. I'm a cash game player and generally believe the best way to spend FPP's are to wait for a promotion that offers $1 per 62.5 FPP's or 0.016 FPP's per $1. They sporadically offer instant cash bonuses or ones that need to be cleared @ that price. Below is a history of how I've spent my FPP's.
Date ---> Comments
02/14/2010 ---> FPP Bonus - 40,000=$650 for the January Sale Promotion
02/11/2010 ---> FPP Bonus - 2,500=$40 for the F40 Promotion
02/02/2010 ---> FPP Bonus - 3,000=$50 for the January Sale Promotion
09/19/2009 ---> FPP Bonus - 12,500=$200
09/19/2009 ---> FPP Bonus - 2,500=$40
09/19/2009 ---> FPP Bonus - 500=$8
06/28/2009 ---> FPP Bonus - 1,000=$16
06/28/2009 ---> FPP Bonus - 500=$8
If you play long enough for high enough, you'll eventually get to SuperNova where there is a $4,000 bonus already in the store @ the $1 per 62.5 FPP's price point. But, until then, you just have to wait for Stars to offer it for the lower amounts.

I think for microstakes players, if they don't want to save their points, and if their sng game isn't TERRIBLE, they should be able to get more than the Supernova standard of $.016/fpp. Obviously, saving up all your fpps until stars has a promo or you are a Supernova would be ideal, but lets face it, not everyone is going to want to/have the discipline to do that.

For Canadians the Future Shop gift cards are pretty good. I think the $200 one works out to $0.015 if I remember correctly. The $1000 one is even better but you need >60k FPPs for that.

Depends what stakes really. If he's anything lower than 50nl, its probably not sacrificing much, if anything it might improve his hourly.
