That's my question as well.
As written my initial reaction was to call and see what hits but without knowing the blinds its hard to say...

blinds 500-1000 with an ante can't rememeber how big the ante is. reads UTG pretty tight, decent player. reraiser not a great player defianetly not giving him credit for AA or KK, but he has almost the same amount of chips as me and were both a ways ahead of third in chips

In general, calling and seeing what hits is precisely the wrong thing to do with AK. When it's for almost half your stack it's totally gross.
Folding is OK but I'd probably shove. Three-betting light is all the rage these days.

baudib is right, never call with AK here, push or fold. I would push then expect to see at least one fold and be at worst coin fliping for a big pot. You are quite likely to have the caller dominated with a smaller Ace.
Once bubble bursts their always seems to be a spate of betting light, no idea why but its a great time to make some chips

Is there ever a MTT situation where flatting p/f with AK is the correct play?

I cant think of an example where you might want to call pre flop. You might fold near a big money bubble, or if you think somebody has Aces or even kings and or you are just in a situation where it is prudent to do so.
Generally you are going to raise or shove, you are probably the best pre and if you go all in you see all 5 cards which improves your chances even more.
Maybe somebody else can think of a reason, some of these guys have much more experience and have seen a lot more situations than me.

blinds were 500/1000. and you were chip leader with 19000? lol that tourney structure sucks. 19xBB = chipleader?
average stack was only 5xBBs?
idk if you have all your facts right, but id probably shove here....
