Just saw this week's WSOP coverage, and a woman shoved over all-in with her short stack, but then the dealer accidentally mucked her cards! She claims to have had AA, but her hand was dead and she lost the chips that called the action and only got back part of her stack. Horrible.

Now, I am careful to protect my cards with a chip in a live game, but I do not use a special card protector. If I shove, my cards are left unprotected. Thoughts? Do the big guns on FTR use gimmicky card protectors? I always thought they were kinda silly.

You should use a card protector that makes it difficult for the dealer to muck your cards. It doesn't have to be fancy, but it should be substantial.

That said, cards have been mucked from under card protectors before. Thus, it's very important to pay close attention and to physically protect your hand (i.e., with your fingers, not just a card protector), and to verbalize, loudly, the moment the dealer starts pulling it to the muck. (In most cardrooms, even if a hand touches the muck, it can be recoverable IF the cards are clearly identifiable. Good dealers are trained to STOP mucking a hand if a player objects in time. So quick verbalization is crucial here.)

I don't think you can really blame the dealer for that. Especially if you're directly to his left or right, you should either announce your action, or wait to make your bet until he's looking in your direction. They are working long shifts and can't be alert every second... they also don't have superhuman peripheral sight.
During a hand I always have my right hand over my cards - mostly because that way I only have to move my wrist to make a bet, but it also keeps the dealer from mucking my cards accidentally.

But while we're at it: What would be the ruling if you put your stack on top of your cards and pushed it in the middle?

WOW JUST WOW

Yeah, cash they'd probably just say fuck it and chop the pot or work something out assuming both players are civil. For a tourney, yeah, that just sucks becuase the other players have such a higher stake in the outcome of the hand.

That was horrible because her cards were behind her chips and close to the rail. The times I've seen the dealer muck cards, the cards have always been in front of the chips and in area of the table where you could understand how they easily got mucked.

That said, I always protect my hand (usually with chips), I'm especially careful when sitting next to the dealer.

With that said, I'd do her:

Yes, it's relevant to the thread. It happened to her.

Edit: Wait, no. It didn't happen to her. I thought it happened to Leo Margets. My bad. I refuse to delete the picture though.

That's how winners play; we convince the other guy he's making all the right moves.
