A buddy of mine in another town is going to run a series of monthly home tourneys, with the overall winner getting $10K to buy a seat at the 2006 WSOP main event.

16 players, and each tourney's buy in is $100. Tourneys are held about once a month, and each monthly pot is split out 900-700, with 900 going to the overall winner at the end of the year and 700 going to the top three or four places at each monthly tourney.

The same 16 players would play each month. You would accumulate points based upon your finish each month. 16 points for first place, one point for last place. Whoever has the most points after 12 tourneys gets a seat at the WSOP.

The winner would be obligated to use the money for a seat at the main event at the WSOP, not to buy a car or pay off debt. If he couldn't go, then the next guy in line would take his place. If the winner of our series of tourneys happened to finish ITM at the WSOP, he would split 30% of his winnings amongst the group of 16 that played each month.

Has anyone attempted anything like this around thier area? did it turn out ok? The only thing that worries me is getting the guys to continue to buy in each month after they realized they were not going to have a shot at winning the seat at the WSOP. But then I thought that for the first two or three tourneys, everyone could pay 200 instead of 100, and the extra 100 would be used for the last 2 or 3 monthly tournaments. Kind of like a security deposit.

What do you guys think??

Sounds interesting if you have a pretty dedicated bunch of players in your group. Wouldn't it be just easier to nominate the person who is obviously the best of your group and just bankroll him/her for the main event? Sorta like how co-workers pool money to buy a crap load of lotto tickets and split the winnings evenly.

I know it takes the fun out of competing, but avoids people dropping out because of not having a shot at playing the WSOP.
