Hello , I played in a 2 table live tournie last night,Prizes £80/ £30 / £10 A Hand I wasn't involved in.
When Player B reluctantly folded to an all-in , he asked Player A what he had, Player A wouldn't say, so as Player B was helping the dealer collect the cards from the middle of the table he looked at one of Player As' Mucked cards and announced "oh , a ten "
I was the only one who saw it, but I said 'you cant do that'
He said 'I only looked at one'
I said ,off the cuff ' you should be made to put your chips in for looking' . This was laughed off by people who had started listening.
It was a friendly banter game , and everyone knew each other .
Ive done a little internet search , but cant seem to pinpoint what should happen in this case.

it's obviously highly illegal and can get you in physical danger in a lot of card rooms.

Playing big pots at small stakes.

I would guess most places would make you sit out for some amount of time.
Then break your legs after the tourney.

Even at "friendly" homegames this should be very frowned upon. Looking at someone's cards (even after the hand is over) without their consent is a big no no. Unfortunately, if no one else sees a problem with it (damn noobs) then you'd just look like an ass trying to do something about it.
Speaking of noob poker players, I had a situation come up in a homegame about a year ago. $5 tourny about 8 players. This player is in the BB and posts. During the deal a 4 is exposed and I regulate the game as it should go: dealing continues, 4 is the burn card. Player A complains that he has two fours and now that one is gone his hand is crap. He takes back his big blind and says he "isn't paying for this hand"- then goes off for a smoke.
As soon as he's gone I throw his big blind back in the pot (we're now on the flop). When he isn't there for the start of the next hand, I put his small blind in deal him cards then much when it would have been his turn to act preflop. Standard nooby procedure for our game is to wait for people to return from short breaks before dealing the next hand. So really is was a very mild penalty, that no one objected to.
I think this was a good a no fuss way to keep the game honest. Kind of a mute point as that player in question was the only one who would make a noobish angle shoot like that. However, if you have multiple semi-dishonest/angle shooter types in your game, you have to help keep the game honest by enforcing certain rules when needed.

Some days it feels like I've been standing forever, waiting for the bank teller to return so I can cash in all these Sklansky Bucks.

I'm telling you right now... aside from a $5 bullshit friendly game, anyone EVER caught peeking at my mucked cards, they better be ready for a haymaker coming from across the table. Bank on it.

we have a $20 buy-in tourney Thursday and Saturday nights each week with a revolving 20 guys. we all go by the same rules regardless at which host we are at.
A mucker can show HIS own cards at the end of play however it is show one person show all............
regarding card ups....
if the dealer flips a card within the first three cards dealt it is an automatic redeal if it is after the third card the player has a choice of taking the card or it becomes first burn.
we also have a set of rules posted for the occasional new player we may bring in. It is visible at all times (usually hanging on the wall) and is recommended to looked at before the tourney starts.
We are all friends and we have been playing together for many years.......

A player is not allowed to looked at mucked cards, however in home games there are usually no penalty other then 'please dont do it again'

i agree that anyone (even someone not involved in the hand) who looks at mucked card should have to payoff the uncalled bet. i've twice seen someone flip mucked cards in AC and the floor didn't do shit in either instance (they were both at Caesar's, though, which is a complete PoS room that doesn't so much as make someone count there chips when you say "how much ya got?").
i still wouldn't do it regardless of house rules because in both instances, the player got suuuuuuuuuuuuper heated and it came close to being a fight

reminds me of this scene from the cincinnati kid:
YouTube - The Cincinatti kid 7/9
skip to the 3 min mark.
although back in the old days, they used to string bet and didn't play table stakes, it has ALWAYS been the rule that you cannot look at the winner's cards if his bet isn't called.

actually, i don't even fooking understand this game they're playing. they're only getting dealt one hole card, and in that AK7<AKT hand, once the dude called with only 3 cards, the hand ended. they didn't even deal out a five card hand lulz

Better late than never - 5 card stud. Along with 7-stud and 5 card draw the most popular games at that time.

well, yeah, but that still doesn't explain the hand where the guy called with the better 3 CARD HAND, and then the hand was over and he won.
