I was at a home game. I won't go into the details of the hand further then I had a straight draw with a massive bet (4 times the pot) and a caller behind.
Took my eyes off the table to think about my decision. When I looked down and said call my neighbor had just grabbed my lighter(and card protector) to light his cigarette and my cards were being swept into the muck. I don't want to go into the possible sketchiness of this, but the final decision was that I got the chips I had originally put into the pot back.
What would be the normal course of action for something like this?

Officially its your responsibility to protect your hand.
In our home game you would just retrieve your hand from the muck in this case

Both ends of it on the turn and river actually. If anything I consider myself lucky for the decision made. And a lesson to always keep a hand or eyes on my cards at all times to avoid losing more.
