I flew 2000 miles to spend the entire week in SinCity, and concluded that it is highly over-rated. At least as far as poker is concerned. Most of the poker rooms are to small, dirty, have little game selection, and a high shark population. Even the cocktail waitresses are all slow, old hags. The dealers weren't top notch either; most of them continuously misread hands, misdelt, screwed up chip counts, etc. The highly regarded Bellagio didnt even impress me. I stayed at the Sahara, and played in their 12 table "room", what a joke, dont even bother walking into that place.
I may be a little bias, due to a run of bad cards Monday through Friday; I went through 155 BB ( $900 ) slide without posting a single winning session. Granted, I was playing mostly 4/8 to start, and 2/4 as the week went on, so the fish are going to have the "schooling" effect, but I have never had a streak that long in fixed limit games. Finally on Saturday, I decided to play in the kiddie game at the Excalibur, to see if I could take money off the rookies. 1-3 spread limit, and I made a whopping $101 in 12 hours of play.
I dont like to spread bad beats, but I think this one is to funny to not tell. My first night in town, playing 4/8 at the Bellagio, an old guy sits down and we are talking about how bad players will hold onto any draw no matter what the action/board is showing. Within 10 minutes of him sitting down, I get KK on the button. Flop K92, and the big blind is a maniac chinese lady, we're 4-betting it all the way with the old guy donating on every call, turn 6, river 3 complete rainbow. At the river, BB bets, old guy finally raises. WTF? Oh of course, he held onto 45 because he had a straight draw, what the hell am I thinking? The maniac proudly tables her Ace hi. This was how my typical good starting hand would go, and I wasnt seeing my normal 20% of starting hands either.
At least my friend had a good run, he only plays no limit, and made 3700 in the 2/5 NL game that night.

So I have heard. I will certainly come out there, perhaps this year. For now, I will stick to the dump known as Atlantic City, plenty of game selection and plenty of fish to fead on.

after more visits than i care to count, i have come to realize that Vegas is more a party town for me than a gambling town. i know it's the city built on slot machines and gaming tables, but i find that i get more action in the piddly little indian casino poker rooms around here than i do in Vegas.
aside from some video poker on the phantom belle machine, which has some really cool graphics and effects that make it more entertainment than gambling, i just party it up in vegas, hit the pool, the late night club, drink all night cause you can there, and drop what i have left on the stupid wheel of fortune machine in the airport. if i want a poker game, i can just hit the NL tourney at home, and i'm more comfortable there.

It is true that the poker rooms in Los Angeles seem much larger than the ones in Vegas. I've played at Hollywook Park and Commerce Casino in LA and both have tons of tables. In Vegas I've played at The Palms, Bellagio and Mandalay Bay. The poker rooms in Vegas are very small compared to LA.
Vegas is king for blackjack and craps but the poker rooms are not that big.

That's the one poker room that I would really like to check out next time in Vegas.

Played there one morning; the no limit talbes were set up as "must move". At my starting table, it was about half sharks and half tourists; when I got to the main table, it was me, another tourist, and 8 locals/sharks. I think I won 2 pots the 3 hours I was there, but that was mainly due to my continued bad run of cards. KK cracked by J8o, next hand QQ on the button, but the dealer had this habit of dealing a 3rd card to the small blind --> misdeal.
If you wind up playing near (within 30 yards of) "the Italian Stallion", dont forget your earplugs. You'll know him when you hear him, and you will hear him; he's like Jay from Clerks, Mallrats, etc, just louder and not nearly as funny.

Hey Steve. Do you ever make your way up to Foxwoods? I'm not sure what you consider big, but I think the games there are great. And a nice mix of talent and fish.
And the tourney scene is awesome.

Never been up there. AC is so much more convenient for where I live. If I really wanted to, I could drive up in the morning, play 8 hours, and drive home. But that's a bit crazy. I really should start taking more weekend trips up there.

Yeah. You should. What I like about it is that the poker room is located in the non-smoking section of the casino.
