So I was playing a local game with mostly players I know very well, when a situation came up against a solid regular player that was stuck a few buyins. He bet the river kind of small-ish and it looked like a value bet. My experience with the player in question said couldn't have been value betting given the board texture, and so must be bluffing. I called with 2nd pair, and he showed 2nd pair with a better kicker.

It occurred to me that a player who is stuck would want to value bet thinner to catch up and a player who is up might be less inclined to value bet thin.

Going over the top might actually work here. Was he just steamed or really frustrated?

I've never seen this player seriously frustrated, but he was steamed for sure. It was a 1/2 NL game and he was buying in 100 at a time, down a few buyins. IIRC, he had just enough behind that a shove would have probably gotten him off of his hand.

I was hoping for more of a discussion on how being up or down affects people's play.

Do people play looser when they are stuck? LDO, that is the textbook definition of tilt. They will play tight until they cross some pain threshold, after which their frustration takes over and the size of their loss no longer holds any meaning. So they don't mind pushing it all in with bottom pair or a gutshot and maybe even rebuying to dump another stack within the next 10 minutes.

Having said that, I have also observed that some players, including myself, will play looser when they are up big. They feel like they have nothing to lose since they are playing with other people's money.
