The other night, I happend upon the information that there are a few regular games in my area - including one place with dedicated space, full time dealers etc. Does anyone here have any experience playing in "underground casinos" like this?

Based on some sites I found, it sounds like the legal risk for players is negligable, and I trust that the game is safe based on the description and the person that told me about it. So I thought I'd start a poll about it.

I have started to play in an underground game fairly regularly, its run by the chinese mafia, there are 3 tables setup, free chinese food and drinks, regular dealers, tournaments 3 times a week, , they have a camera setup on the door, and only let people that are recognized. I love it, and have really slowed down my play online, in favour of goin to the poker club, not to mention i made 3000$ the first night i was there., that definatly had an impact as well.

I just know about Ohio so i'll talk about it.

When they bust and Illegal card room here in ohio, the house gets in trouble. The players have their $$$ taken. So the worst you could really loose is whats in your wallet. maybe have to go to court to pay a $75 misdemenor gambling charge.

I wouldn't play. Not when its so easy to play in a legal game or online.

I would play for sure if they had something like that around my house. I've always wished there was something like that within 30 minutes. Just something like the chesterfield south lol. Teddys setup would be phat too.

Rounders is the first thing I thought of reading your post, then saw the "3 stacks...." reference in the poll.

I've only played in two underground games around here, but they charge exessively high rakes. I've only played 3/6NL and 5/10NL there, and they raked ~10%. But I did make over $800 in two games.

As far a legality, here in NC, the house gets busted and they take all the cash from everyone. I always leave my extra buy-in or other cash in my car.
Is that guy still part of the forum??

Cool. I was basically thinking the same thing - I can't wait to check this place out. The stakes for the one with full time dealers is $20 buyin with re-buys and add-ons. So sounds like a nice setup.

I've played at one in Denver. It's labelled as a private club. Cameras at the door, only familiar folks get in. They run a tourney every night of the week, then spread ring games after that. It was pretty cool and I didn't get the impression it was any kind of organized crime operation. It's run by some mid 20s guy who just happens to have the balls to set up something like that. The rake is pretty big compared to a casino, but it's closer than the casinos for most of the clientele.

I'd say go and check it out at least once. If it's not your scene, log back on and play online. I don't go very often, but I'm glad I went a couple times.

I'll probably never stop playing online - but from my own private home games I've played, I definately enjoy live action a lot more.

I think the biggest benefit of playing online is convenience. Any sized stakes are available any time.

I live in the Springs too. I haven't been up to the place in about 5 months, so I don't even know if I'm still "in". I kinda stopped playing there after tourney buy-ins went up to more than I was comfortable with. They do have a Friday night $35+5 now I think.

I don't know how to get you in without going up there and I don't know if I could even get back in. Wish I could help more.

I've had a similar type of expierence with one exception: the guys that run this place are Greek, not Chinese. The owner also owns a pizza place, so it's free pizza for all. The guy is super nice, although I think he's too nice, meaning he will play hands just to lose $ to his players on purpose. Unfortunatley for me, when he tried to extend his gratitude my way, Lady Luck said "fuck that". I was down a little bit for the day, and I make a set of Aces on the flop, there is one spade. This is 5/10 LHE, btw. I'm betting strong, he's calling me down. He catches spade spade to complete his flush.

The 2nd time was in a NL tourny. I play extra tight, and finally i get dealt KK. Raise the 25/50 blinds to 250. He calls. It's heads up now and the flop comes out 7 4 3, one club. I go all in for about 500 more. He calls. Club club. I think he was trying to double me up on purpose, and just got lucky, because there's no other justification for that call. I mean, he's not that bad.

I would avoid illegal operations unless I was tight with the people running the show. I have a feeling you would run into a host of unsavory characters in that type of joint. Some degenerate will try and stab your ass for your wallet when you leave a place like that.

I much rather Atlantic City, the computer or the comfort of my own legal home game.

Well considering I go packin heat to any questionable places (which is very few, I rarely ever have it) this would not be a problem for me. Especially since my best friend goes strapped everywhere and he would most likely be with me. If someone stabbed me (or my best friend) their ass would be dead soon after. I think places like that would try to keep people prone to those acts out since that would most likely get them discovered and shut down. I also think these places would have some kind of a pat down or metal detector since I think they could easily get knocked over if they didnt and there is probably lots of cash around.

Firm no from me.

I generally don't feel at home in places that I know could get busted for being illegal at any given time.

Online, in a legal casino or at home are the places for me.
