This weekend, 2 friends and myself went up to the Turning Stone casino in Verona, NY. I'm still 19 (for another week) so I'll have to wait for Atlantic City for one more year. Anyways, I'm set to play in my 1st live tournement. 25$ No Limit with $5 re-buys for the 1st hour. We started with 500 chips and if you re-bought, you would get another 500 chips. The re-buys were crazy, it was everyone going all in, then just re-buying if they lost. Some guys re-bought 10 times... Anyways, I had to re-buy two times and the only hand I won in the first hour was with pocket Queens, but it was enough to get my by. During the break, you had the option to put down $10 for a 1,000 chip add on, I did. After the break, I started to clean up. I got pocket 10's, aces, kings, and 8's. I won with all except the 10's. Some guy called my re-raise with j4 and won when 2 jacks came on the flop. My goal was to make it to the final table, and I ended up finishing 7th out of 150. The final round of blinds was 7,000/14,000 with 2,000 ante... what a drain. My prize was $329... not too bad for my first time.

They all know me as a small timer, but that's about to change.

Congrats. Sounds like it was a blast.

But $5 rebuys in a $25 tournament ... yikes. I can only imagine how crazy that'd be.

Yea man, it was crazy. People were all-in with 10 7 offsuit and basically any hand you could imagine.

Thanks though, and it was a lot of fun.

Forgive my ignorance, but what is the legal gambling age in New York? Isn't 21 the norm? Just wondering.

The Turning Stone is on an Indian Reservation, so they don't have to go along with the state rules. They said they are one of the few where you only have to be 18 to play.

I've always thought the re-buys and add-ons should be more expensive than the entry. That way people would only re-buy if they thought they really had a chance of making something of it. But 1/5 the entry for rebuy, and 2/5 entry to add 2x the starting chips???? Thats not crazy, thats just stupid, why not make it a $50 tourney and start with 3000 chips? Or find a tourney director who knows what they're doing.
Is that guy still part of the forum??

That was in question right before the start of the tourny. They asked everyone by show of hands who would rather have a 50$ buy in, no re-buys or add-ons, and the results were in the favor of that way by far. I'm sure the next time I go up there, I'll find out. The other way is really just like playing the lottery until the 1st hour is over.
