In my home games, we usually start with 40-50 chips and start out at 1-2 blinds. It is nothing like an actual tournament, because we wait until a set number of people get out to raise blinds, because we start with such little chips.

I proposed the idea of starting with 100 chips (doing denominated chips, because now we just grab 40-50 chips), but everyone bitched and said that the tournament would take too long. I said, we can then raise the blinds every 15 minutes and it would be like a real tourament, but no one would do it.

I rarely host tournaments because my house just doesn't have room for more than 8 people, so I have trouble enforcing things at other players houses.

Any tips on how to convince the ametuers to switch it up?

Real easy. Just print out a blind scedule showing the amounts and time of each round. And tell them that with the scedule it would be far quicker than just playing straight blinds. You might even get in more than one game.

Just have them try it once. Pring out a sheet like FyreFytr998 said and show them how it'll work. Then try it. They might not like it at first but will probably soon fall in love with it.

My friends used to do the whole, "We're not raising the blinds until somebody leaves." Well, we'd be sitting there sometimes 3-5 hours later playing $1/2 blinds in the later stages of a tournament. It's tough to get a tournament finished when three different guys have $150 or more and you're playing 1/2 blinds.

Anyway, my buddies showed up at my house for a huge tournament I had (about forty people)...and when that puppy lasted as long as our normal eight-man tournament (five hours) they were impressed. They've never played their old tourney style since...
