I'm considering heading to Foxwoods eventually and would love to hear about experiences there.
What's the smallest NL table I might expect to find? As a new guy, I'm not planning on taking a big bankroll.
What kind of skill level do you see at the different NL tables?
Any B&M rules that are unusual to look out for as a newbie? Funny rake conditions or anything?
Thanks!

$1/$2 NL is the lowest you can get. There are a wide variety of table limits to play. The only real thing you need to make sure of is to get there early. The lists fill up fast and it's not uncommon to have a waiting time of an hour and a half or more by early afternoon. If you check out their website you can see the tournaments they run regularly. If you plan on playing the $1/$2 NL. Play tight. People will call just about anything and you will get sucked out on. I'd bring a bankroll of about $400 or so. More if you want to play the $5/$5 or $5/$10NL The easiest tables to get on are the $5/$10 limit tables, because they have a Kill Pot anytime the pot reaches $100. Which essentially turns it into a $10/$20 table 85% of the time. Good luck.
Remember. Early bird gets the worm.

I'm not real clear on the Kill Pot either, so I started a thread in the beginner's to cover that and hopefully keep this thread on track.

What's the max buyin for tables, 20xBB? So the recommendation for a $400 bankroll is so you can survive getting wiped once?
Getting called down on everything is something I am having to learn right now with my home-game friends. He was kicking me all over the place until I finally realized that once he bet post-flop he wouldn't let go.
5/5 tables? Hmm. I suppose that takes a little adjustment to have two equal blinds.
Thanks for the advice. Sounds like it would be a get a breakfast on the road and be in the casino by 10am if it is a weekend. Would that work as "early"?
Is the wait-list still that long on work days/nights?

The max buy-in at $1/$2 NL is $100. You can sort of get around this by buying in short for $40, posting a blind, then rebuying for another $100. (You have to be below $40 to rebuy.)
I think Fyr suggested $400 because you may need to rebuy a few times on bad beats or just not getting any hands. I agree - $400 is a good amount.

Yeah, it's kind of ridiculous. I won't play a hand for 2 hours straight. Then I'll raise it up preflop and get 3-5 callers.

I'd suggest steering clear of the $5/$5 tables until you have more experience there. These seem to be much more serious. There is no max buy-in, so some people sit down with $10,000. And some people play these tables professionally.
My friend is trying to get me to play $5/$5, he even said he would stake me. But then he tells me about bad beats that cost him $8,000 pots. I'm not sure I can handle that yet.

10 am is about perfect. They usually start opening new $1/$2 NL tables at around this time.

I've only been there on a few different work nights. The list isn't as long, but AFAIK the games aren't as good, either. The games are the best on Saturday and Sunday.
You asked about newbie B&M things:
The first is to make sure you "toke" or tip the dealer whenever you win a pot. Some people always tip just $1. I tip more on larger pots. The dealers make something like $3 / hour ... less than minimum wage because they work on the reservation!
The $1/$2 NL game is played with red $5 chips. Don't bring $2 chips to the table unless you want to piss people off. You can usually buy chips from the dealer right at the table.
The $1/$2 NL game is not raked. It costs $5 / half hour to play. There is a light on the wall that goes on to tell the dealers to "take time".
When you arrive, you need to put your name on the $1/$2 NL list. This list is kept way in the back of the Poker Room. You can't put your name on the list at the closer sign-up station.
And Fyr is right - some of the $1/$2 NL games are incredibly weak. Some people will call all-ins with top pair, any kicker. Be happy if you get seated at one of these tables. Then just show up with the cards. This is kind of what aokrongly mentioned in another thread as "playing cards", not necessarily playing poker.
Also, because the game is so weak at times, I tend to push all-in when I would usually value bet on the river. So if I have the nuts, I'll push. You would be surprised how often this gets paid off.
Preflop raises at $1/$2 NL are not usually 3.5 * big blind = $7. At most tables, you need to raise to $12-15 to be taken seriously. And sometimes you'll still get 4 callers. If this happens to you, don't panic. If your hand is still good, just bet a little less than the size of the pot on the flop and usually you will take it down. This can be very profitable, but a little scary.
My biggest stack so far at one of these tables was $1450 after 27 hours of play. If you see stacks up around this size (especially more than 1 or 2), watch out!

Oh - and if you are ever going to come back, you should pick up a Wampum card before you start playing. There is a station for doing this near the buffet / food court area. You get something like $.50 or $1 / hour in Wampum Points for playing $1/$2 NL. I usually just use this to pay for my food.

Wow. Thanks Zangief, that's great advice all around.
So there is no cap (if I remember my terminology right) on how big a stack you can have at the $1/$2 tables, eh? I guess that also encourages showing up at 10am before people have had time to build much up.
The $1/hr in Wampum does help offset the $10/hr seat charge. That charge is that same 24/7? So you can't get cheaper by being there on mid-day Tuesday, huh? Ah well.
Thanks again!

I've never heard of a cap anywhere, but I don't have much experience elsewhere.
You'd be surprised how many people actually play through the night. My stack was around $800 at 10 am on Sunday weekend before last. But, yes, there will be fewer big stacks. Most people don't really know what they are doing with a big stack anyway, though.

The Wampum helps a little. But you pretty much pay out that amount for tips for drinks, too. So you're not gaining much ....
Yeah, same $10 / hour raping 24/7/365.24. Last time I played, they took $350 from me during the weekend! That's like 1/4 of my total profits. And that's why I've been looking for other cash games. But nothing is as convenient as Foxy.

Ha, my ex-girlfriend asked me to stop calling it "Foxy" because she made the same jump. But no other nickname is as cool.

Ha, thanks. Where's my plaque?
I play very few tourneys. What are they offering in November?
For the most part, I don't feel like I have a big enough bankroll to play a $60 tourney. If my chance were as good as 1/200 to win, I'd still likely go broke before I won. And I'm quite sure my chances aren't that good.
I'll probably be playing $1/$2, or hopefully, $5/$5 by then.

I plan on playing one of the satellites for the World Poker Finals. I can't wind up on the WPT if I don't try right? Who knows? Can't hurt to give it a shot.

Well I'm thinknig about doing the $500 NL tournament on the 2nd of November. Also if they have a low enough satellite on the 12th. The complete list for the 2005 event is up at The World Poker Finals at Foxwoods Casino. Check it out.

I just played down there last night and made a killing. The 1/2 NL players are retarded. They have the fundamentals somewhat down, but are otherwise mostly just horrible players. Things I find helpful:
*Don't raise less than 5xBB preflop unless you want 6 players to the flop
*You will need to probably overbet the pot to deter people from chasing. 1/2-3/4 of the pot will NOT do it. People don't get scared until your bet gets in the realm of $40.
*Have at least 3x the buyin available. You don't want to be in a situation where you know you should go all-in but don't because you don't want to end your night if you lose.
*DON'T judge a book by its cover. You can't tell who's good and who sucks just by looking at them. (Sunglasses + hat usually indicates suckiness though. )

Tyler,
Did you come out good despite the seat-fee? That sounds like it hurts for the 1/2 game.
I'm thinking about heading down in July, while the wife and kid are out of the house and I have considerable time for myself.

Yeah, the time charge and tips were pretty much a non-issue. If you play reasonably and the cards hold up you'll definitely find yourself up at least a couple of buyins.

The $1/$2 NL game is not raked. It costs $5 / half hour to play. There is a light on the wall that goes on to tell the dealers to "take time".
Now it is raked not rented.

nice current thread...the play at the small sng's is so friggin loose. I played a $60 sng this weekend and got knocked out by two hands...I had AQ preflop pushed and got called by 45 offsuit...flop comes 844 or something. Later on I have KQ suited and push...get called by K4 suited which then hits the flush. Good stuff

Yes I heard FOXWOODS changed it to a rake because MOHEGAN SUN has a poker room now and thats the way they do it over there.
Raked pots now.
And Foxwoods has a BBJ on all poker tables the last time I went.
