Post subject: talking people into folding

I've only done this in reverse (talking people into calling). Has anyone tried talking someone into folding? How effective is this compared to just waiting silently for the player to decide?

I was in a tourney the other day and had won a few pots in a row uncontested. In the next hand i hit 2 pair 1st and 2nd. So i bet pretty big and the last person in stalls. Then another person starts calling me a bluffer and telling this other person to call me. I quickly thought and started typing in stuff like NOOOOOOO and I have it fold!
I was hoping for a call but he laid it down and i showed my cards, was hoping to sound like a noob and get a call . . .
But i succeeded in getting him to fold maybe i should have told him to call

I've talked to people before, usually telling them to fold into my big bets..
I tell tighter players to fold into my big bets.. I figure they will fold anyways, might as well re-assure them. Plant the seed of doubt and make them think i'm lying.. If they fold np, i figured they would. IF they call it well of course I've got the hand

I play against a guy who talks ALOT when he plays. He'll bet and say "If you can't bet my 2 pair get out" and "If you can't beat my K high flush get out"
He'll call the cards like "I need a king or a Jack"
Pissed him off last week because he said "I need a jack" (on a board that the Jack could have made the straight.)
Well he got the jack and bet out, and everyone mucked it to me, He mumbled about the table being too tight.. I looked at him and showed top pair / Ace kicker and mucked it. (talk about tight)
Sometimes he's telling the truth, sometimes he's not Either way its fun to play against him.

someone told me to call once, and since I remember Caro saying this usually meant a bluff, I thought about it for a few and moved all in. Folded, felt awesome.

I prefer not to talk too much and I don't like people talking about the cards. I also don't think that you can rely on talking sombody in or out of a hand. If you act strong, conventional wisdom is that you are weak and visa versa. However, you know that, and you know that they know that and you know that they know that you know that etc.... I don't think anyone has ever talked me in or out of a hand, nor have I done it that I can recall.
What bothers me is the wise guy punks who talk trash, like "don't f w/ me" after they drag a pot. I really find myself fighting down the tilt. Oh yeah, and please don't thank someone after you bust them. That is just low class.

yeah, that is so crappy. I see it all the time on tourneys where someone bets goes against the nuts. If im ejected on a bad beat i may have a quick moan at the cards but i always say "gg all".
If people ever say sorry for sucking out on me I always say np, happens all the time. I seen some dick who was like "god damn right you are sorry".

Let me guess. Stuipq (or something like that) on Party? Isn't he a ray of sunshine? It got to be so predictable, that when he took down a pot I would pre-empt him by typing "dont f wit him." I think deep down he loves me so much that he showed the table when he took down a pot by raising my river bet with a busted flush draw.

What's wrong with thanking someone for their money? I genunely appreciate the players that come to Party Poker to play bad poker. It's a gift I've come to appreciate. The least I can do is say thanks every now and then and cheer them on when their A7o cracks AA all-in pre-flop. It's a wonderful thing.

I have found something to say that gets people to fold.
This works best in a showdown, after the river, in person. If someone is taking a long time to decide on a call, I have said. "if you fold, I'll still show you."
It bugs them, but it tells them that I know I have the better hand and I want show it off.
I feel like a total ass when I say it. But it seems effective for those people who are OK with feeling like asses when they are stacking chips.

Speaking of saying you'll show them...Playing in small tournaments with my friends a lot of times it would come down to the showdown or a hard decision for them and they'd ask if the other person would show if they folded, or I would ask if they would show, if I was in the situation. I'd usually answer by saying yes no matter what and showing them. That way, if I have it they feel good about folding, if I don't, the next time I do have it they are sometimes more likely to call. If I asked and someone said they wouldn't show it, I usually put that on that they did have it, but I usually folded if I asked anyways, can't lose what you don't put in the middle...can't win much either.
