Hi all,
One of the guys at my tournaments occassionally gets irritated by another who more-than-occasionally string bets. There's no rule about it in my house - I like to keep it laid back. I can see the players that frequent casinos also seem annoyed. Have you ever had to address this?
Thanks,
Buckeye

Laid back poker like you describe is a lot more risky than you might think it is. There is a lot of room for some serioously bad feelings, many a good frendship has been strained or ended because of simple things once money is involved.
The rules in poker give everyone an even playing field and it keeps the game fair. It is very hard to cheat when you play things "just like in the casino", this is because they have developed these rules by beating every kind of cheater there is. The rules also cover every manner of human error that you can think of, and a home game is even more prone to having those errors.
You will find that after the waves settle down from implementing the "by the book" style of play your players will enjoy the game even more. You will also be more likely to get return players. Just tell them that you want to emulate the feel/style of a casino, they'll grumble in the begining but trust me, the game will get better after you do.
There simply is no good reason to NOT play the game the "right" way.

The first time someone placed a string bet we let it go, but we stopped the game, explained to everyone (there were some new guys) what a string bet is and why it isn't allowed.
The next time one of the guys wanted to raise but had only put in the bet without announcing a raise he looks up from his chips and says "I guess I can't raise now huh, or it'd be one of those string bets". I told him he was right, play proceeded and everyone was happy with the decision.
I think as long as everyone knows the rules of your house they won't have any problem following along. Ignorance can be accomodated, but once the players know the rules, there isn't much they can say about it.
Plus, running a tighter game makes everyone feel better, even the guys who are more laid back. These guys want to play fairly and don't take the game seriously, but they do recognize how they have a lesser chance of being cheated when rules are being enforced.

If it annoys a player, simply pull the "offending player" aside, ask him to correct it politely, and move on. In my home game, i don't stress over string bets, because no one besides me is looking at it for information.. It's just habit. But if someone has a problem with it, then there needs to be a resolution. I've seen more than one poker game end in bad blood because of a lack of rules.

Cool, thanks for the input. I printed out all Roberts rules and put em in a binder when I started having tourney's, I guess I don't realize how much of an issue this one can be. How can someone "cheat" when string betting though? Why did it become a rule in the first place?
Thanks,
Buckeye

Lets say you were going to make a $20 bet and see someone with a look that says to you "is that all.. I'll call that" then you reach for more until they look scared.
