What a recreational player tells you something about his hand he's not lying.
This is a rather surprising result, but's it's true. At least in the limit games I play.
Why is this?
Reverse psyscology might be one reason. Because poker is about deception perhaps people think they're being decptive by being straight forward.
Also, I think it's an ego thing. People put their self worth in their hand. "Nice hand", "Thank you" as if your hand is a reflection on you. So in effect they're saying "I have you beat because I'm a better person, I'm going to tell you your beat and you're still going to call."
A couple recent times this came up...
I have K8 clubs in the sb and complete
Flop is 8 high all spades. I check, loose player bets, loose and somewhat aggro calls, I just call. Turn is a red Jack, same action. River is blank, I check bet, raise saying "I flopped it". I fold. Call and yup, he flopped it.
I have AQo MP and raise behind a loose UTG limp. A few calls including a tight player in the SB. Uh oh. Flop is KQ6, tight player bets out "lets see where I'm at". I fold. Tightie had 66 and wanted to see if I had a bigger set .

One other thing about tells.
When playing poker your mind wants you to call. You're looking for a reason to call because you came to play/gamble not fold, nor do you want to raise the white flag. An important tip I got was that most tells aren't telling you to call, they're telling to you fold. If you look hard enough it's easy to find some silly tell or draw permitting you to call.

I realize that as you say it Fnord, my friend said that he had the worst hand in poker when we were playing because the flop had a 2 & 7. He thought people would think of it as a joke that he has the worst hand and he really did have it.

It's not really a tell, but kinda along the same lines. When I'm holding a huge hand, and want it to pay off. Telling someone that they're going to fold to you, right before going all in. Then they have 2 choices, admit that your right and fold, or call and get screwed. Most people don't like being told what to do, and feel that your trying to bully them. It's nice that most people don't think like you.

I guess this would work the other way, as well.
When you want someone to call: anything, a pause, chatting, whatever will give him an excuse to do so.
When you want him to fold: just don't do anything out of the ordinary.
I am going to try this!

in my experience if you do try to bully someone on the river, say you got nothing, you have no balls, i'm going to take this pot, etc, they will fold, because it is obvious you have it and are crying out desperately for a call.

the following has happened to me several times at B&M cardrooms:
i flop TPTK, 2pr, or a set. i ram it out. then someone wakes up on a coordinated turn and raises me. i re-raise.
at this point, they say something like, "what, do we have the same straight?" or "are straights no good in this casino?" or "i have the nut flush, how can you have anything better than that?" then amazingly, they just call me instead of capping.
the river comes, i check-fold (unless of course i fill up), and they show their cards. in these situations they are NEVER bullshitting. they are just stupid idiots, allowing me to fold my hand and saving me several wasted bets.
the moron factor at B&M's never ceases to amaze me.
