I normally host a cash game, but next week I'm going to switch up and host a tournament style game.
My goal is to have luck play as small a role as possible. My question to FTR is this: do rebuys and addons level the playing field or do they give the skilled players an even greater chance of winning?

I think the skilled player would get an even greater chance of winning. The bad players that rebuy are shouldering a greater percentage of the prize pool. Sounds like a nice plan to fleece your buddies.

Just remeber to plan your time accordingly. As it will surly lengthen an already long night.
Also watch out if any of your buddies got deep pockets and aggressive habits. Has bad beat written all over it.

Well these guys have a fatal flaw: they ALWAYS think they are being bluffed. Always. So of course I've learned to never bluff against them.
In the long run this works out great for me. But I do have to withstand the occasional bad beat, when they call me down with 3rd best pair and catch 2 pair on the river. I figure a rebuy/addon could help me recover from one of these bad beats.
As far as time goes, I would think you almost have to look at it as if you're starting a new tournament after the rebuy/addon phase ends.

Rebuys make things crazier. the guys who bluff alot will be more willing to go all in if they can come back. hehe if you really wanted to make luck have as little impact, make the blinds several hours long. then even if you got cold cards it wouldnt matter because you could keep folding away.

I just played in a rebuy style tourney over the weekend. It benefited me greatly. I played against a mix of Loose/Passives and Calling Stations. I didn't make any rebuys and took home first place. There were 12 people, 2 tables of 6. One guy at my table used 4 rebuys and another used 3 rebuys, while 2 others used 2 rebuys each. By the time we combined tables, I had about 14K in chips, after we started with 1000. This gave me a whole new outlook to allowing rebuys!
