Hey,
My friend (also a member of FTR) and I are working out the details for running a weekly NL100 game on our college campus. We are going to buy a fold up 10 person table and nice clay chips of some sort.
We were thinking of running 1/1 blinds, so we wouldnt have to deal with $0.50 chips, but still have a $100 buyin and 100xbb stacks to make moves with.
We also want to have a full time, non playing dealer who will be compensated for his time in some way ($$$). We were thinking of running rake, or going on tips to accomplish this. What we dont give the dealer we would put towards buying everyone in the game takeout or pizza and drinks or whatever.
Any comments on this setup? Suggestions would be extremely appriciated.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
On a seperate note, we are also very concerned about the legality issues of "sponsoring" a game such as this in a state where gambling is illegal. Do you guys think we could get busted bad for running this game? Can you suggest any way we could run the game so that we could assume denialibility? By this I mean, running an underground casino in your basment and profitting from it is obviously illegal and you will get fined/ go to jail for it. But on the other hand you will NEVER get in trouble playing $10 poker in your kitchen with your buddies, right? What we are trying to do falls somewhere inbetween the two. We were thinking of paying the dealer with tips instead of rake, or maybe moving the game location every week so its not like its "being sponsored" by one person. (Just thoughts)
Anyway, any help with this would be extremely appriciated.
Thx

I didn't read all of your post but let me say that raking a home game is gay. I woudln't play in that game. Get a dealer that will deal for some pizza and beer and believe me some college kid will do it. No rake = more fun.

hmmm....maybe you are right. Paying the dealer wasnt really my idea, but it seemed to me like it would add a sense of professionalism to the game.

Pay the dealer but don't bother taking a rake. Just take a one time seat charge. Five bucks from everyone (or around there) to play isn't unreasonable, and it's enough to pay the dealer and get some food.

i play at a $100 NL game at my college in some basement of a bar with a bunch of old guys. they play 1/2 blinds and take a rake w/ no alltime dealer. it works pretty well, they always have 2 full tables at night, and no one complains. all they supply is beer which no one drinks. ive never really heard anyone complain about rake, i think your game will be fine, except the 1/1 blinds sounds kinda weird...me and my brother are building 3 tables to put in our garage to hold games once or twice a week, but we are doing 30 person MTTs, $50 buyin, $5 or $10 fee. check out www.homepokertourney.com for advice, its a great and useful site.

I am gonna be doing the same thing, but I bought some extra chips that would be .50 for .50/1 NL games or 2 for 2/4 LHE games.

thanks for the input....the 1/1 thing was so that we could have 100xbb stacks without having worthless .50c chips. Do you think its really that much of a weird thing?

you don't need many .50s on the field, keep some in the dealer tray for when people post blinds... that's how our local b&m handles 2/5 blinds. it's a red chip ($5) game, but the tray has change for SBs

For the blinds, you could make it $1-$2, like PP used to do. $1-$1 is just wierd.
First point, are you sure you're going to be able to fill up a $100 NL game? At MY college, I was having trouble getting a few guys together for a $5 NL game, much less $100 NL.
Second point, DO NOT RAKE. The RAKE is what makes it illegal and why that kitchen game isn't a problem. As for the dealer, just get him to do it for some beer and pizza or something. At college, you'll find SOMEONE to do it.
Third point: I'm not sure how you're going to be able to get away with charging anybody a "seat fee" or anything like that, as someone suggested.
Try keeping it more of a personal attitude, without fees and stuff. Ask some people if they would chip in for beer and food.
My thoughts.

Same with BU (boston university)... a 40k/year tuition creates tons of rich kids who love to gamble but don't feel like making the trip/aren't old enough to hit up foxwoods... always a ton of 50-100 dollar games that ALWAYS fill up

I dunno.
Maybe it's just that public universities have less rich kids.
I went to UW-Madison freshman year: 40,000 undergrads
I go to UT-Austin now: 65,000 undergrads
So I don't think it can be the fact that larger universities tend to sponsor larger games.
Higher tuition rates = more kids willing to gamble with more amounts of money? Now that I can buy.

I go to UC Berkeley, which has like 35K undergrads, and there are plenty of games during the school year, though most are low stakes (20$ buy-in or less). There is only one game (and I played in it) higher than this, which was playing .50/1$ NL, 50$ buy-in. No one raked any of the games, and I wouldnt play in a raked home game (might as well just go to a casino). Thankfully, most of the guys that run the games (and deal) are sharks and run it to legitmately make a profit of the other players, and dont rely on rake to make money.
Next semester we are hoping to begin a 1$/2$ NL, 100$ buy-in. The new kids keep getting richer and richer heh.

BR now: $106900
Playing now: $10/10/20 - $20/40 NL live, $10/20 NL full ring online, $10/20 NL 6-max online, $20/40 FL 6-max online, $100/200 FL live
Goal: $125000 for $25/50 NL live

Hot damn man, I go to UT right now also. I know several people willing to play a .50/1 game at school. We used to play .25/.50 games in the dorm study lounges too until DHFS got on our case about it. I'm gonna actually be setting up a game out of my place next semester if you're interested.

I'm not worried at all about getting enough people to fill up a 100NL ring game every week. I bet after a month, we will have people lining up at the door fighting to get a seat. My college is relatively small at 4000 undergrads, but poker is rampant on campus. I go to UR (University of Rochester) and the $40,000+ tuition brings lots of rich kids who think they know how to play cards.

Ok you are probably right about this. 1/1 might be too strange. I guess we will try .50/1 blinds with .50c chips in reserve on the dealer tray. I dont know what my partner is going to think about this though, since hes buying the chips (nice clay ones I think). I really dont want to have 1/2 blinds without a $200 buyin. And I think that alot more mediocre players will be agreeable to trying their hand at 100NL than 200NL, and the last thing I want to do is chase them away.

Shit.
I guess we arent going to be raking (you are right anyway its kind of gay). Seriously what do you guys think about this? Because I definately dont want to get busted for running the game. I mean, that article sounded pretty serious about fines, community service, and all that (and the kids got of easy!). This is a huge concern for me.
Thoughts?
