Would you like my opnion or the legal way? I will give you both.
In most states that is illegal by law. I am not saying they will catch you but it is illegal. It states that doing this you are operating a gaming site inside your own home. Something like that
Now my opinion; yea dont do it. I think its dumb. IF they provide beer and food and stuff then ask for a donation.

I am not a fan of it AT ALL.
A game i have played recently rakes 10% up to $4.
That is totally ridiculous in my opinion. But is this worth it when the table has $2000 to $3000 on it and it features 3 of the loosest, and holy shit do i mean loose, players I have ever seen?

IMHO its not worth the risk. There is no place I am aware of where it is actually legal to do this without a license.

I know in Ohio, it's illegal to take a rake. Not to mention, it's just plain rude, and will get you smacked down Ohio Style.
Do what I do... suggest everyone bring beer. I always end up with like 15-20 beers left, which is about 15 dollar value. It's better than a rake, and then when I lose my money, I can drink my blues away!

I also feel very bad about this. If you rake with the intention of buying food for all, then I can see how it *might* be okay (as long as everyone knows beforehand). But if you're just raking because "hey it's my game I can do what I want" then that's crap.
I don't see why everyone else has to pay money to play and you get the rake money and play for free (or close to it).

Yeah, I didn't like cleaning up my place after I had a huge home game a couple weeks ago (27 people)....but the beer/liquor I found laying around more than made up for it.

We just have a "donation" jar sitting on the table by the food. Everybody tosses in 3-5 bucks to cover the food and soda. All other drinks are BYOB, so there isn't a huge cost to the host. This seems to work out pretty well in our group.
As for raking, never mind that it's illegal, it's also rude. The host shouldn't be trying to make money except by winning the game.

It's only illegal to collect a rake if it doesn't go back to the players in any other form.
ie, you are technically allowed to collect a rake if you are using it solely to buy, say, pizza for everyone with it.

I don't like it. I think it is better to ask everyone to throw in 5 or 10 bucks each for food and stuff.

I'll have to slow it down next year when I get a full time position, that's for sure. In 25 days when baseball starts (I played in college, I'm a coach at a high school here in town) I'll be chilling out a little too.
Right now, though, I can live it up on the weekends just like I did in college.

I was thinking about building a bar and just selling booze for real cheap, even super cheap shots and you can still afford to buy booze the next time around, that's probably illegal too though.

Well what's left to reiterate? A friendly home game is no place for a rake. Just tell people that if they wanna eat or drink. They gotta chip in. Tell them it's a card room not a bed and breakfast.

Umm.. the original poster is asking about playing in a game that someone else is holding that has a rake. So stop giving him advice about not raking!

Just tell them to bring beer. Like the guy before stated, you'll probably end up with a 12 pack at the end of the night.
Also, if you play with the same group then I'd ask a different person to bring new cards each time...that would save a few bucks.

I must have good friends because most all of them volunteer to bring food and drink on their own and it's never a problem.

I find out how other people feel about (out of earshot of the raker) and do it discretely. When everyone else has a problem with it, I invite them to my newly established homegame and tell them it is rake-free.

Just don't do it. It's lame, especially among friends. Just ask folks to take food/drinks/chips, or whatever. Home games are home games for a reason, if they wanted to play a raked game they'll start heading for the local indian reservation.

I would not play in a homegame with a rake.
