So I was in Punta Cana for 8 days last week and just had to make a trip finale report on the B&M there. I was there for a wedding for my good bud Dave (sweetlemon). Jesse (d0zer) frequented the tables with me and was equally as dumbfounded at the lack of training.
First of all, tiniest casino in the world. This place is at a brand new resort so of course it will be small and still working out some bugs. Secondly, I blame management before dealers because of a severe lack of training.
The following is a list of things that stood out in my mind with the poker in this room:
1) 5% Uncapped rake. Although everyone at the table seemed to have no clue how to play decent NLH, there is an argument to be made that this game is unbeatable.
2) One table, and it's 2/5, $50 minimum, no max buy-in. The table only had players on it from about 11pm until close - 3am.
3) Dealers would often take too much rake and would only correct it if someone at the table were to notice and point it out.
4) Sometimes pre flop was raked, sometimes not. This is where the terms 'Dealers Choice,' or 'Pending Dealer,' came from. Same goes for small pots post flop.
5) Some dealers took forever to calculate rake. Some were faster than others but the bottom line is that not a single dealer knew how much was in the pot until after the pot had been counted twice after the hand was complete.
6) Dealers had a hard time figuring out which was the best hand. At this point, you are probably not surprised.
7) Multiple times dealers mucked my winning hand. I remember one time where I had T9 on a KQJTQ board vs J7 and it became obvious that the dealer was very confused. The moment the dealer picked up my hand towards the muck - I stood up and threw a hissy fit.
8) Dealers often assumed that kickers always played and would ship the pot the that player.
9) Posting blinds, seat changes, basics of the game were not enforced. A few times I was able to move from UTG to the CO without having to post.
10) Every time the pot was at least $50 the dealers would ship the pot (only after a few minutes after showdown) they would beg for tips.
11) The game was unbelievably slow. I guess approx. 15 hands per hour. I played in 5 sessions, totaling about 15 hours, so about 250ish hands. Down 2.5 BI's for the week. Horrible coolers and bad beats that I'm not going to get into. Great time overall of course!
