Just asking for some advice on how you all cope with variance in MTT's. ~2 months ago I started playing almost all MTT poker. At my highest point I had tripled my bankroll. In the last month or so, I've probably been getting ITM about 10% of the time. Some are very large field tournaments but on average the field is around 300. I dont even want to look at how many times I've been two outed on the river in the last couple weeks. Its really gotten to the point where I expect to see it on the river. Ok, enough of the complaining...

Regardless of the fact that MTT's have done wonders for my bankroll, I really dont have the confidence I used to at the table. I certainly dont go into a tournament thinking I'm going to win. I've looked through my hand histories and there arent any blatant mistakes that have resulted from the variance. But I definetly dont feel confident when I'm going to enter a pot, which might have some bad effects like not trusting my instincts, etc.

So in short, how do you keep a high self esteem and positive attitude when you run bad?

I was doing very well for 5 months (Dec-April), but the last two have been horrid. I keep getting caught on TPTK, pushing draws too hard, and generally getting myself into sticky messes OOP. I also think variance is rearing up, as I've lost set over set 5-6 times during this period.

I'm not exactly sure how to get it back, other than tighten up a bit.

im probably the last person who should adress this lol... but I always think im going to win going in. you have to.. why would you play at all if you think you are going to lose. really think about it, playing something and thinking you will lose. I go in expecting to win, do I win alot or oall the time ...NOT!! attitude is everything and its something people pick up on so when you play go in EXPECTING to win, if you dont shrug youre shoulders and wait for the next game
It's easy to shoot fish in a barrell............. Just throw in a stick of dynamite!!

I just came out of a little rut like that...the thing that seems to have been my problem was the basics ALWAYS remember the basics, don't get to caught up in advanced play that you forget that a flush beats a straight (not litterally) and on and on...and don't just tell yourself, but KNOW that you are a good poker player and these things happen to even the best

And just like John Vourhaus said in "poker night" "you are born broke, you will die broke...everything else is just fluctuation"
