So, I live in California, which has had legal poker for probably 150 years.
I hear about various bar tournaments - but not here in San Fran. Are their legal reprocussions? Are most bar tournies "under the table" so to speak?
Was going to try to convince my local pseudoirish pub to sponsor poker.
I guess I could could just go to emeryville or santa clara

Poker, in all forms, has been legal anywhere in California since the mid-90s.
The only thing that would make it illegal is if the host (or anyone) is directly making money from the poker in any way other than winning it in the game (taking a rake, for example). You need a gaming license to do that.
As long as the bar is not collecting a rake or other fee, they may freely and legally host poker games.

Zen, I've got to think there is some kind of city ordinance that prohibits this in San Francisco. There are home games out the wazoo, but I've never seen or heard anything about a bar tournament.
Actually a friend of mine (someone who plays in my home game) claims that his roommate played in a bar tournament, I guess in SF. But repeated e-mails to this person asking him what bar it was at have gone unanswered. I'll try to find out more the next time I see this guy.

By the way, Lucky Chances and Artichoke Joe's are both closer to SF than Santa Clara (Bay 101?) or Emeryville (Oak's). AJ's is in San Bruno and Lucky CHances is in Colma I think.
