D.C. area poker players rejoice!!!
On Dec 5, the citizens of Jefferson County, West Virginia, voted to legalize table games at Charles Town Races and Slots, reversing their tragically misguided 2007 vote against them. Table games will open by summer 2010. Unfortunately, this article says poker will have to wait until after they start up BJ, craps, and roulette. But it IS coming, at long last!
W.Va. voters OK table games for Charles Town Races
Charles Town is only 90 minutes from D.C., as opposed to the 3.5 hours it takes to get to Atlantic City. Finally, we will have legal poker games in this totally underserved region, where the pent-up demand is enormous. I cannot wait to spend my weekends in WV!
Now it is only a matter of time before Maryland legalizes our game to compete with WV... hehe...

I just found this news article which quotes the GM of the casino saying that, in fact, poker could be up and running BEFORE the other table games. He also says they are probably going to rename the place.

Pennsylvania just legalized poker and table gaming, too!

Now it's just a matter of time before Maryland feels the pressure of competition and legalizes table games... I can't wait!

Just dug this up from the SEC filings of Penn National Gaming, dated Feb 26, 2010.
PENN NATIONAL GAMING INC - 10-K - 20100226 - FORM
In December 2009, we announced that we intend to install table games at Charles Town Entertainment Complex following voter approval of table games in the December 5, 2009 special election. Plans currently include the estimated addition of 85 table games and 27 poker tables, a high-end steakhouse/lounge, and a Hollywood on the Roof entertainment lounge. The table games, poker tables and the entertainment lounge are expected to be completed in the third quarter of 2010, and the high-end steakhouse/lounge is expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2010.

My god, is all this really happening? Somebody wake me! Atlantic City is going to lose so much business in the next few years...

Yeah, it's great. I guess the only downside might be the thinning out of existing home games in the mid Atlantic. There are a lot of games running where I live so hopefully they won't die out!

Thanks for all the updates Chez!
If you or anyone gets a chance, bump this thread as these table games start to go live. Those of us on the east coast that would visit these places, but are far enough away that it is not on our local news would appreciate it.
Thanks

My friends who frequent the 2+2 boards said they read the rake at Charles Town will be up to $7 when you include the jackpot drop. OUCH. Still, it's a hell of a lot cheaper than getting a room in AC, not to mention all the damn road tolls.
Charles Town radio spots now advertise the fact that poker is coming soon. As far as I know, they are still on track for a July 1 start. They are renaming the place to "Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races."
Delaware Park was supposed to open Memorial Day weekend, but it looks like that has slipped to "sometime in from the end of May to into June, depending on how the state of Delaware rolls it out." Dover Downs is targeting "mid July."
But apparently Delaware already has a few poker rooms which operate as "private social clubs" and don't rake the pots. They just charge a daily fee.

So, did anyone make the trip to Delaware Park this weekend to see if their poker room really opened? I was wrapped up in my baby's first birthday party all weekend. Looking at their website, it appears they did not get their shit together by Memorial Day as originally hoped.
But I did find this:

Advertising posters in the Metro system say Charles Town will start their table games in July.
This article explains how they are planning to buy their table gaming license from the state at 12:01 a.m. on July 1 then race to build their poker room in time for the July 4 holiday traffic.
West Virginia: Charles Town casino hopes to deal in July
Licenses can't be bought until July 1, the beginning of the state's fiscal year....
"We think we have a plan worked out so we can be open for the Fourth," Al Britton, general manager of CTRS, said last week.

HOLLYWOOD ARRIVES AT CHARLES TOWN–Table Games Begin July 2
Charles Town, W.V., June 7, 2010 – Charles Town Races & Slots is getting a Hollywoodstyle facelift. The West Virginia gaming and entertainment destination plans to roll out a new name – Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races – and begin to introduce table games action to guests starting on July 2.
The re-branded Hollywood Casino, conveniently located just an hour away from the Washington, D.C. and Baltimore beltways, will add table games to the approximately 5,000 slot machines and year-round thoroughbred racing already available at the property.
The re-branding brings extensive renovations to the gaming floor that will invoke the glitz and glamour of 1930s’ art deco Hollywood. The latest audio-visual technologies will also be featured, such as a giant serpentine video wall that projects first-run movie trailers and video shorts that greet players at the main entrance. Plasma screens and video trees will be added throughout the casino for guests to enjoy as they play.
Several table games areas, including high limit and party pit areas, will be added to the casino floor, offering a total of 85 tables. Twelve different types of table games are featured including: Blackjack, Craps, Roulette, Mini-Baccarat and Pai Gow Poker, among others. A 27-table poker room is expected to be open at that time.
“We’re adding substantially to the variety of entertainment we offer our guests,” said Al Britton, Charles Town Races & Slots General Manager. “For years, Atlantic City was the region’s only table games option for players in the Washington/Baltimore markets and the Tri-state area. Now we’re able to offer a first-class casino destination with tables that is not only more convenient, but extends a high-quality experience to guests that is marked by the red carpet service we deliver at Charles Town. And we know that our players who enjoy slot action and thoroughbred racing will discover an even better atmosphere to enjoy their favorite games and wagering activities.”
Charles Town Races & Slots, a Penn National Gaming property, is a world-class entertainment venue offering visitors more than 5,000 slot machines, live and simulcast horse racing and a wide range of food and beverage choices, including the 350-seat Epic Buffet. The historic Charles Town Races has hosted live thoroughbred racing since 1933 and began offering gaming to visitors in 1997. Conveniently located about a one-hour drive from the Baltimore and Washington DC beltways, Charles Town Races & Slots is one of the region’s fastest growing gaming and entertainment destinations with more than four million visitors each year.
Hotel accommodations can be found on property at the Inn at Charles Town, which features 153 comfortable guest rooms including 18 spacious suites that overlook live thoroughbred racing action. Guests can enjoy a complimentary breakfast buffet, wireless internet access and can unwind by taking the complimentary shuttle service to enjoy racing, slot action and dining at one of nine restaurants at Charles Town Races & Slots. The Inn at Charles Town offers a variety of rooms to host business or social functions.
In July 2010, Charles Town Races & Slots will introduce table games to a newly renovated casino floor and be renamed Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races.

The local D.C. advertising for the rebranded Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races is in high gear now -- TV and radio spots, posters in the Metro, and full-page cover ads on the Metro newspapers -- so I imagine the lines are going to be ridiculous for the next month or so. My friend and I will likely venture up there next weekend.

Just went this weekend. Lines for poker were down, heard they have 16 of 27 tables up and running. No idea about the action on poker, had to pick up gf from Dulles.
Craps, Blackjack, and Roulette were all $25 min. (Roulette lets you put down five different $5 bets, but with $25 min. The Roulette table guy said though they were talking about lowering the limits on craps to $15 or even $10, but not for a bit. Don't know if that will just be during the week or not.
Probably will have to go back soon.

Latest word is that they now have 20 tables running, and the wait lists are way down. Table game limits are down to $10 too. Sounds like it's time to pay a visit soon. Only major problem is that instead of raking the NL games, they charge time @ $12/hour... ouch.
