I would like to share some things I do that i consider "playing the player" that I think can be very useful online when you can't observe the person giving off physical tells. Screw fundamental poker, just mess with their heads! This is just a general thread, feel free to share your own or even your own interpretations of mine. The ones I'm about to list I use mostly in NL tournaments, but I don't see why you couldn't use them in any other game.
o Standard MTT situation goes like this: I raise preflop, someone calls, I miss the flop, they call. Turn is a blank, so what do I do now? Most of these players I don't play with on a regular basis and combine that with the fact that I am constantly switching tables means I don't have a great read on them. So I base my decision on one thing: the time it took for them to decide. If they had to think about whether to call or not, if the turn is something that doesn't complete any obvious draw I usually bet again. There are two times when this fails: they are slowplaying, and only took time to think about whether to raise the flop or call and wait, or the more likely case, they always take a long time. I can't count the times where this sole factor has saved me chips. At first, don't comfortably rely on it, but it is something worth noticing.
In poker tournaments, there are two stages where I think it is best to have two completely opposite table images.
o In the beginning of a mtt or sng, you want to play tight, but when you do play you want to get your hand paid off. The best way to do this is to show your table crappy cards. My favorite act to pull is to call with trash from the button, and when its checked to me i bet huge. When everyone folds I show my cards and proudly proclaim "lol i was bluffing." It works great! People think you suck and if you do it again with the good you are very likely to get paid off. Of course, you have to make sure that you will get everyone to fold. This also works even better if you pull this twice, but be cautious because they might stop you from doing it the second time. If you do get caught doing this you can use the fishy lines "thought it was sooted" (or "but it was sooted" depending) and "thought i had a straight."
o This one is far simpler than the previous one. Once you start to steal alot (when you don't want people to call), you should show your good hands. People remember what they see! This is best in MTTs because you usually have a different table or at least several new people at your table when you get to this stage. Just raise standard with good cards, they fold, and then you show. Next orbit, if everyone folds to you, raise with your 92o but don't show. This is so easy but sooo effective. Like I said, people remember what they see. Turn off auto-hide winning cards and start messing with their heads.

The 2nd idea of showing good cards when you steal a blind to make your opponent think you only raise with good cards is a tactic I like to use alot, and makes me some chips in tournies.
