I have recently lost a few big pots to players that went all in with hands like low suited connectors, low pairs, etc. I made judgements based on their past play and figured they had mid to low hands and were trying to buy the pot. The few times I called when I had top starting hands I ended up getting beat on the turn (1 time) or river (2 times). These are not pre-flop AI's, more like mediocre raises then AI's. Have I just been running into players "catching" things or am I doing something wrong. One guy twice called huge raises (not by me) with f'n rags and caught his hand on the river. THAT guy then got me on a decent pot when HE went all in against my raise.

I know its the nature of the game...just blowing off some steam

well if it went down as described then your playing against bad players.. Unfortunatly we've all taken our share of beats, and we have MANY more to come.. brace yourself.

Hang tight, play tight, and bet strong.
make sure you take notes on the "bad players" because if you can recognize it then you can crack them..

Mike's right... I would just add that you should take a few minutes to cool off before you take notes on someone who just whooped ya'.

Writing notes about the player who just took your money when you are on tilt is unproductive. It ends up being things like "MORON!!! BETS ANYTHING!!!"

Relax, take a break, and then come back and observe their style of play.
Your notes and your bankroll will thank you for it.

Those hands did play out as I noted. I know I have gone on the chase and been successful...hasn't everyone? But does it seem like there are too many "bad" players out there with big bank rolls just taking chances and not caring if they drop a wod in a session. I am no expert, but I consider myself a fairly good (and always learning) player. I enjoy going into a game with good players and if I lose then so be it.

I am just wondering if there is a way to recognize those maniac players and either stay away, or even better hunt them down and take their donations.

I personally like playing against the AI maniacs. You might have to withstand a little more variance in your bankroll if you take a bad beat, but if you play a little tighter and can nail them just once, it's worth it. Some of these guys will go all-in pre-flop three or four times in a row. With a little luck, I've seen them acquire an impressive bankroll(over $100 at the $25 NL PP tables), and usually lose it just as quickly. It can also makes other players play looser out of frustration, which can make for some nice pots if you get a quality hand to play. Of course, sometimes I end up just folding a lot if I'm getting mediocre or worse hands.
