OK, I'm starting to learn more about putting my opponents into groups, but there is one thing I'm foggy on.
If I bet big, I'm aggressive. If my opponent bets big, he's a maniac.
Do I have the basics down on this, or is there more?
I'm hoping to get Fnord and Ripptyde to reply and give me each of their answers to this. I think both may be very informative. Fnord seems very good at classifying and analyzing, and Rippy seems aggressive (maybe to an extreme, but I won't judge cause I've seen Rippy's results.)

I don't know what they have to say
It makes no difference anyway.
Whatever it is...
I'm against it.

Can i add another question to this thread, do people bother making notes about players in SNG's or just in ring games? I had a go making notes in an SNG but didn't find it very useful.

Maniacs bet big without a hand, or make too strong of a bet relative to their hand (tieing them to the pot) too often. However, solid players are more selective with their aggression, saving it for when they got the goods or their opponent is likely weak. To make an analogy, lots of people drink but few people are an alcoholic.

i mainly note things that catch my attention - e.g. "2xBB on KK with 6 players" or "no PFR with AA level I" or "8xBB PFR with 66" and definitely "chaser with a draw regardless of p-odds"
those are the types of things i like to remember.
fnord and rippy, would you like a moment alone? :P

I have a related question, and thus begins my actual training phase of my time here at FTR (my first post was more of a commendment / thank you post, and "here I am!" )
When I saw the title of this post on the Beginners Circle FAQ, I thought of one thing... A table I was sitting at last night while chilling out in my room relaxing. If you've read my first post you'll know that in my current situation I'll ONLY play money games with friends in real-time; I'm not comfortable enough with my experience yet to go losing money in online rooms, and my friends are all relative newbies too so its really just a poopshoot game with like ten bucks thrown in for fun.
However, lately I've been getting more into the game so I've been looking for more opportunities to play; thus, I've started searching the online rooms, etc. I play Yahoo Poker when I'm bored (yeah I know, groan it up ) because I figure it gives some experience without the risk of losing cash too early on, not feeling too confident... I've managed to double my intial stack, and to this point the main thing that bugs me is something I'm sure many people notice when playing "fake money" games... It seems like everyone is a maniac. That's how I come to the topic of "How do I beat this player?"
In almost every table I sit at there's a player sitting at next to nothing (or negative chips... go Yahoo...) who will Raise every chance he gets; spamming the Raise button so fast that its obvious he doesn't even consider his chips. This is a problem for me because its a huge investment just to even see the flop (especially since in a 10 seat game normally 2-3 people will routinely call him EVERY single round, obviously just as careless) I know there must be a way around this; if Poker was so simple as just raising all the time, it wouldn't be any challenge at all. However, it just seems like I can't get anywhere because it's costing me an arm and a leg just to see the Flop, let alone to the river. When I do venture out with a hand I feel is strong and I manage to win the payoff is nice, but I lost about 20% of my stack yesterday at a table with someone like this just because I either had to fold and keep losing cash to blinds that would eventually be raised up (can't check through) or pay to see a flop just to end up with something I feel really dismal about.
So, fire away. Completely open to suggestions / advice, and I'd actually feel quite special to have someone answering MY question for once

Damn Ripp nice post, I see where you come from in No Limit it probably matters less to understand how your opponents are playing because you can extract why much more value on huge edge then in limit, I think limit it's a bit more important...
Yahoo poker plays nothing like real money poker, PerfectDodge believe me, you don't get anywhere near that much action...
You can't out think people that don't think, you simply have to revert to playing cards and calling down more and Ace high has no win value at all anymore, don't bluff value bet... some of the concepts we talk about will never work in a play money game ever, so don't try to apply them there...
best thing you should do is play .10/.20, .15/.30, .25/.50 something like that instead if you got like $100 you're good to go for anything to about .20/.40 (<< $120 is 300bb)...

Well, I figured as much... Its not hard to see (even for a relative newbie as me) that nobody is really thinking. You'll watch some guy raise, raise, raise, then end up with K4o, and wonder just what he was doing... Until he does it six more times. I don't want to seem like I'm trying to learn the secrets of Poker using Yahoo's free tables; really it was just more of a time burner while getting a bit more comfortable with online play. As I stated in another thread though I've downloaded ParadisePoker and I'm playing with Play Money for a bit to get comfortable, and as suggested by other members I intend to make a small deposit in the relative near future and play some low stakes games... Gotta do more reading first however because I still feel like I'm going blindly on a lot of hands.
