Hello, my names Brian.

I have been playing nl holdem for about five months now, and I would say that I am doing alright. I can hold my own, but I'm no pro lol. I have always been trying to bring my game to a new level, and recently I have begun to try to pick up on betting patterns.

There is not that much on picking up betting patterns on people, I have googled it many times lol, trust me.

So, I was wondering if any of you guys have tips on picking up on betting patters? Do you have a "mental list" of things you watch for on a player? Any particular players (ie those to your imidiate right/left?). When I try to pick up on them, I will soley focus on the first person who raises pre-flop, and then watch what he does on the flop (like I see if he always posts a continuation bet, etc.) What do you guys look for? Like if he will check/call draws or over-bet the pot with TPGK with a flush draw on the flop?

Basically and "insider" tips on picking up betting patters.

Thanks a lot.

PS: Do you guys bother trying to identify betting patterns in a single table sng or a 2 table sng/tourney? Turbo sng's? <-Because you might spend a couple of hands trying to read this one guy when all of a sudden he busts out.

For betting patterns IMO i think it just takes time and a lot of hands. After playing for 5 months i started to get the idea of betting patterns. Initially i sucked at it. But after awhile betting patterns get easy, I've gotten pretty close to mastering them after 2 years or so. I'd say the easiest to pick up betting patterns is in ring games, because SNG's you also have to take into account steals. It doesn't take putting that much attention on to learn. I don't really think about what goes through my head that much. But pretty much you think of what every bet means. It may be as vague as oh he raised preflop he most likely has a good hand. then on the flop he bet half the pot on an Ace highflop, probably has the ACE. It gets more complicated from there.
Read hand histories here a lot and play and don't worry it'll come naturally.

Do you play on Pokerstars? If no, download it and check out the May 21 Final Table replay with Rizen doing the commentary. When it gets to HU it focuses a LOT on getting reads by betting patterns. It is interesting to check out.

Under the Tourney/All tab, make sure you uncheck "Show Registering/Upcomming only." It is in black right on top of the currently playing tournaments.

Found it last night. Fascinating...

Although my low skill level in reads makes its hard to believe that he actually had the reads he discusses during the contest, his results make it hard to deny.

Makes me think there is a lot I can learn regarding reads, and my skill and confidence in my reads could use some work.

Especially on-line, I've found that abnormally fast or slow bets warrant more attention. If a player is out of rhythm, something is up.

A lot of players play the same hands the same way too. If they pick some odd number (5x BB) on a raise and show down with Ace King, watch out for that same bet latter. If a player is using the 1/2 pot and Pot buttons regularly and then quits, something is up.

I see it as IowaSkinsFan, it takes so much time to figure out the betting pattern (at least for me) so I try to rely on my hands, position and gut feeling. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
