We have a really good home game. It started about six months ago, and was a big reason that I got so interested in hold 'em.
We play at least once a month and take turns hosting. We have about 20 players who consistently play, so we usually get 15-20 to show for a given game. I hosted the last one and had 18 show up. This has grown over the past few months, as people bring guests and the better ones end up wanting to come back. We maintain a mailing list so its easy to arrange, etc.
Of the players in our home game, 3 ended up at the final table in a local charity tournament (103 players). 2 others were in the last 20. They all play pretty seriously and one of them used to be a dealer in Las Vegas (great shuffler, but lousy player), and has lots of advice for us. Three of the better players are pretty hot women, which is a nice extra.
This group started out as a one table tournament, and about 5 of the originals have stuck with it. We grow by inviting friends and acquaintances who have an interest. We play $30 or #50 buy-in, depending if hot Deb is playing or not (her limit is $30, but its worth it 8) First pays 50% of the pot, Second 25%. Depending on the number of players we might pay to 4th or 5th place (barely get their money back).
We've invested in some pretty nice chips, and the play is pretty serious. After the main event, or while its finishing up, either a dealer's choice or second hold'em tournament gets started. At the last one we actually ended up with three separate tournaments that lasted until 3am.
I've seen people looking for home games, and if you're close to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, PM me. You also might think about getting a group like this started. It wasn't easy at first, and some of the initial players didn't stick, but we've gradually grown the group to include people none of the regulars knew before they got invited by a friend of a friend.
