Hi all,
I was at the casino for a full 11-hour session yesterday playing $2/$4 limit.
I knew that I should have been observing the table, trying to detecting patterns and styles, etc from other players. I did not know exactly *how* to go about doing this.
What is your observation routine? Is there an algorithm/flowchart? What exactly are you looking for?
Each time a hand is dealt, what do you tell yourself as the bets come to pick up on the right information?
Is there a mnemonic or filing system that you use as you see information to make it easy to remember? How do you organize your info?
Thanks all. Really looking forward to getting some discussion on this aspect of the game.

I haven't played at a casino and at the table i lose focus with my friends. Online I try to look how much they raise with big hands, small hands...how they bet draws, what their checks mean, what hands they showdown, etc. Try focusing on the players left and right immediately of you. Then spread outward. These two will have the most impact. Otherwise, it comes with playing many, many hands. Someone else will chime in.

Yes, a topic I actually feel I know a ton about.
When playing $2/4 at the casinos they are a few things you need to keep track of, in order of importance:
1. Pot size
--nothing can be more valuable to a low limit player. I love dealers who announce number of players to the flop, it instantly helps me determine pot size.
2. Find the button
--Position Position Postion, you can lose track of it at a 10 person live game.
3. Cards seen at showdown.
--take note of what types of hands are winning pots, who was holding those hands, and who was the aggressor and who was passive.
4. Players folding out of turn/Stack size uner 10BBs
--no easier way to spot a fish
5. Reads
--This is so low on the list b/c they really don't mean much in a limit game. There are, however, 1-2 reads I will always use
---Read #1: The think and check ( you are about to get c/r'ed)
---Read #2: Sudden better posture (someone is interested in the pot)
In reference to helping yourself remember things about other opponents...I would hardly waste my time. Opponents come and go so quickly that it seems foolish to focus on their game play. If the person seems to be a regular or seems to have an extremely profitable tell then I will keep reminding myself of it.

You don't need to read the table to win at $2/$4 limit in a casino.

Thats helpful, way to bump the post count
the first thing to do is split everyone up into categories..
Rocks, Tags, Fish.. pretty simple.
How do I pick them out? Some of the quick give aways.
Rocks: quite often they have either a patient attitude, or look at their cards and muck them with a frusterated huff. *the frusterated huff could be tilt, use your judgement* Sometimes they wait till the action is on them to check their card
Tags: You will see them look to the left to double check their position and then fold. Sometimes they wait till the action is on them to check their card
Fish: well they just show themselves really fast. They will look at the very first card dealt to them ass soon as they get it, eager for action. They also call alot
Combine these with betting patterns and you can get a pretty good read pretty fast.
Once I have people broken down (hopefully within 1 rotation) I start looking for betting patterns and other tells that help me further classify them.
Rocks - tight weak (can i push them around post flop) or tight loose (they got a hand and now they want to see it through)
Fish - Maniacs or Calling stations...
Tags.. tricky or abc?
Table selection can exsist in a casino, you can always leave the table and get back on the list hoping for a different table, or even tell the people mainting the list that you would like another table. Quite often they will accomidate your request. If the lists are long you can request a seat change button.
I don't play alot live but those are some of my basics.

also make sure to watch how people act after losing..
how they handle themselevs after they lose can give insight into how they will play the next few hands.
