This may be a silly question, but I've never played a live Holdem game despite tens of thousands of online hands, and I'm about to host a live home game -- it will be a tournament of 9 players, no re-buys, increasing blinds starting at 10/20, etc. I have a nice 2000 piece chip set with mostly white & red chips, fewer blues & green, and the least amount of black. I believe in casinos W=$1, R=$5, G=$25, Blue=$50, and Blk=$100. So the questions are:

1. Are those denominations correct?
2. Should I do the standard 1500 starting stack (as it usually is online)?
3. Most importantly, how many chips should I give out (which denominations, etc.) that would make sense for this kind of tourney? Thanks!

First things first... Set the deck so that you triple up the first hand ... and then cruise to the money

Seriously I do a home game every few weeks. Its nothing regular. I think the most important thing about a home gaem is having little shit to snack on and good buds. As far as denominations go I normally give out a little extra chips say 3000 instead of the standard 1500 and push the blinds to every 20 to 25 min. I am assuming that you are not hiring a dealer so you will prob get in like max 30 hands an hour. So take that into consideration.

If you want to play a cash game after then I wouldn't give as many chips out because more than likely that is where the money is going too be made and you want as many people in that cash game as quick as possible

So 20 - 25 min blinds; 3000 chips; and if it turns out to be wrong then take notes and do it better next time. Have fun

Here's a simple advice on how to get more hands in, and it works great:
use two decks!
So during a hand, the SB (or whoever) is shuffling the other deck. And when a hand is over, you can start right away, and the used deck goes to SB for shuffling.

I don't know if this ideal, but this is how I usually set it up:

Red = 5
Green = 25
Black = 100

If there are a ton of people and it's warranted we'll use a few purple chips for denominations of 500 after the second color-up. Each person starts with 1,000 in chips (20 red, 16 green and 5 black). We used to start blind levels at 10/20 but since pushed it back to 5/10. We raise blinds every 20 minutes.

Blind Structure:
L1: 5/10
L2: 10/20
L3: 15/30
L4: 20/40
***Color-up***
L5: 25/50
L6: 50/100
L7: 75/150
L8: 100/200
L9: 150/300
***Color-up***
L10: 200/400

General Payout Structure:
2-5 players: 1st place 100%
6-8 players: 1st place 70%, 2nd place 30%
9-12 players: 1st place 50%, 2nd place 30%, 3rd place 20%

I agree with the two decks idea. It does speed things up. I also agree with the 3000 in chips as well. It gives people the ability to play a little looser at the begining. I would set the time for blinds at 10 to 15 minutes. Good Luck and enjoy the Home Game. Food and Beer are a must and just hit them for 5 bucks each comming in the door to cover the cost.
Play Smart. Change Stratagies. Play the Streaks. Quit while you are ahead.

See Donk bet
See Donk raise
See Donk get lucky on the river and bust your AA with a 27 off suit
See Donk get shot in a live poker room
Dont be a DONK!
