I've just started playing Texas No limit holdem at home with friends for a few months. We've been debating on this issue - whether you have to show BOTH cards to win a pot with (at least) another player still in the hand.

To be more specific, 2 players are still in the hand. After 5th street, Player 1 bets and Player 2 calls. Is player 1 required to show both cards to pick up the pot? (Sometimes player 1 just shows the 1 card that made them a pair, and I was argueing that you have to show both cards if you get called).

What about Player 2 in the same scenario? If Player 2 calls player 1's bet, and player 1 shows his hand, does player 2 have to show both cards to win the pot? Or is the caller only required to show 1 card that gives him the winning hand?

Thanks in advance.

While you are free to make your own house rules, all casinos and most home games require showing BOTH cards in order to win a hand.

This is pretty much a standard... showing both of your cards to take down the pot is good, but sometimes when mucking, people only show one of their cards to leave other people in suspense at what he exactly had.

From Robert's Rules of Poker

Section 3: General Poker Rules

THE SHOWDOWN

1. To win any part of a pot, a player must show all of his cards faceup on the table, whether they were used in the final hand played or not.

Note: For those unfamilar with Robert's Rules, "Robert’s Rules Of Poker" is authored by Robert Ciaffone, a leading authority on cardroom rules. He authored the rulebook for the Poker Players Association. The organization subsequently made it available to the general public. Over the years, he has worked on rules for a variety of casinos.
