All input is greatly appreciated, good or bad!

So I fooled around with online poker for a couple of years before I turned 18 and played heads up with a buddy in high school weekly for six months or so. I have also of course watched a lot of poker on TV.

I've decided to hit the tables at my local casino(s).

I started off with 3/6 limit and lost $200 over the course of two sessions and determined that 3/6 limit is not my game. In a casino not too far from that one I found they had a 1/1/2 spread game which is what I am playing now. $200 max buy in $200 max bet blinds are 1/1/2 4 to complete.

My first session was a bit ridiculous lasting over 18 hours and winning $450 in chips. I started off on a Friday after work and left at 2PM on Saturday. This was a learning experience not to play that long ever again. Someone actually told me I look strung out which was exactly what I needed to hear. Just because you're on a streak doesn't mean you have to keep playing. My second session I broke even, third session (this Monday) I lost a $200 buy-in and left, fourth session (Tuesday) won $130 or so within 2 hours, fifth session (Yesterday) won another $170 or so but this time it took me 6 hours and there were ups and downs during the night.

There have been several hands where I did not get the most value and I tend to beat myself up a little bit after the hand is over for not betting or re-raising. There has also been one occasion where I overplayed 10's ( this is where I lost 1 $200 buy-in ).

There are plenty of soft players most of the time, however yesterday I found myself sitting at a table with what seemed to be like a bunch of tight players. I moved and nearly doubled my buy-in. I consider myself a decent player and am looking forward to getting better. I made a couple of really solid plays post-flop yesterday ( at least I think ) by betting out with nothing in position assuming the two players involved that called my pre-flop raise didn't hit ( the board was all low ). This worked twice and I pulled in a couple of decent pots with nothing.

Things I feel I'm decent at:
Hand selection
Discipline ( I know when I'm beat and I rarely "donate" chips to someone )
Hands that you can play in late position but NOT in early position
If a hand I fold pre-flop hits on the flop I never let this effect my selection. Sure enough a lot of players I've seen beat themselves up and I strongly feel they loosen up.
Leaving when I lose and I feel I no longer have the mentality to wait for cards

Things I know I need work at:
Reads
Turning off my reads
Leaving after I make a healthy profit of $100 or more if my session is exceeding a few hours

I'll just go ahead and post a mistake I made yesterday. I had 4/9S in the BB and limp in. Flop comes 4/K/2 I'm heads up with one player. I bet out 8 and he calls. The turn is another 4. I bet out 10 and he calls. The rivers brings a deuce. I check to him and he bets 60 chips. I figured he had a 4 like me and just called his bet and he ended up having a deuce and I lost a lot of value on the hand. I think he had around $60 in chips left - I probably could have swooped on them.

I'm planning on hitting the tables again today!

What a GREAT night! Great run of cards and I feel I played 90% my best all night. The 10% is one hand I misplayed and lost on and another hand is that I did not get all the chips I could have possibly gotten.

I started off playing 3-card poker w/ $40 while waiting for my 1/1/2 table (FFTF) and hit a three of a kind on my fourth hand paying out 30 to 1 ($5 bet) and entered my table with about $183 in chips so I payed the extra $17 to sit down. Only $57 out of pocket!

After reading an article here about giving off the appearance of that your a crazy loose player I decided to try it out. I won some pots and here is one that stood out. Dealt AsQs 1 behind the button. Three limpers, I raise to $16. Fold fold one caller. The flop came Ten Nine 4 two clubs. Player bet out $20 and I quickly raised to $40. Turn was 2 of clubs. Player now bets $40 and I think about it and raise him all in. Dude stared me down for a solid 20 seconds ( this was an intense moment for me, my heart was literally jumping out of my chest ), and he ended up putting me on a set or a flush. Player shoed 10/3 or something.

That hand gave me some confidence and I preflop raised to $20 a few hands later with 8/2 in position - 1 caller. Flop came no over cards and I bet out $40 and quickly won the pot. Caught a sweet straight and won another nice pot, and another huge bet pre-flop with crap in position to take down another. Heres where I screw up - I get caught leading with crap on the turn and have to fold to his re-raise.

At this point I'm up $120 or so.. nothing to write home about, but I was happy and for a couple of hours $120 is not so bad.

Ate some dinner and sat down at another 1/1/2 table - this is where the fun begins! I feel that i made some great plays here. I started off betting out with crap in position and took down some pots. Had Qc9c OTB and preflop raised to $20 and got two callers. Flop came 10 J 2 rainbow. check to me and I bet $40 again and unfortunately got one caller - but i caught the 8 on the turn! Given the image I created for myself I bet out of position to $20 with Ace Ten. Flop comes 10 rag rag. SWEET! I end up taking all of someones chips and he called me down with Q/10.

I spent 6 hours tonight and ended up leaving with a profit of $780 - about 4 buy ins!!!!! This is by far the best session i have had yet since i started this Friday and now my roll is about 6 buy ins and some change.

I have a TON to learn still and I don't feel any sort of an edge yet.. but I feel with practice and reading I will get there. Taking down 4-5 pots with nothing feels great !

More to come.. tomorrows Friday! I think I'm going to play my normal tight aggressive style and not try anything crazy!

Congrats on having such a great night! Sounds like you ran really good. I wouldn't get into the habit of raising 82 too often, though

I look forward to your next post.

Thanks! Definitely an awesome run. I enjoyed reading your post on aggression BTW. Thanks for the tip on not raising with 8/2 It worked out for me a couple of times but I did get caught once and do not want that to happen again.

I'm going to hit the tables hard again today - will post results as they come in.

Always nice to hear about people playing real poker at tables like that.

Tight is not the optimal strategy in those games, although you do have to be aware of game flow and know when to gear it back down...

Well - I have had 2 sessions since I posted last and have only netted a $275 dollar gain over the course of 8 hours. At one point I was up $500 or so but I took a couple of beats - one of which lead me to make a couple of bad plays unfortunately.

Friday session started off as a good one, the only hand that is memorable is that bad one. I played for a few hours and was $200 dollars up! Nice! Later on in the night (11:30PM or so ) I was dealt pocket kings in good position. One gentleman raised to 15 total. I re-raised to 45 total, he calls. The flop came Q/J/K. I flopped a set! Great right? I get all of my money in there and he flips up 9/10. Did I make a mistake here? The flop is pretty damn ugly but I did flop a set, I had NO idea he would be holding 9/10 or even A/10. No help on the turn or river and I lost my 2nd buy-in in my poker career. No sense in me re-buying at this point because it's late and I'm sure my game would have been effected which is proved the following day. I probably shouldn't analyze this hand too much - I don't think I could have gotten away from this. I was thinking if I pushed all in pre-flop he would have folded and I would have made an easy $15, but that's clearly NOT what you want to do with this hand.

Come back the next day and start off great! Dealt kings THREE times, Aces once! Again - the only hand that is truly memorable is the bad one. I'm dealt pocket Queens and by the time it comes to me it is raised to $30, I raise to $60 and dude pushes. It took me a while to make the call but I did make the correct one - he flipped over AhKh. Flop came with no ace or king but one heart. He runner runnered his flush and took all of my money - the third buy-in I've lost. This was the first time I re-bought after losing a big hand. At this point thanks to my previous winnings at another table I was still up $130 - but wasn't too happy. I was dealt three pocket pairs in a row all lower than tens. Nines Eights and Sevens I do believe. I dwindled down another $100 or so to be at about even for the night after 4 hours of play. I switched seats at the same table. I hit a flush on the turn and won an $80 pot - I started feeling a little better. Moral of this story is to maybe take a break after a beat until I get my head straight because i'm not at the point to just immediately re-buy and have the same edge I normally would ( over certain players of course . Anyways - I requested a table change and ended up winning another $150 at my next table. I had pocket 7's and the bet to me was $15 with two people involved, I cam over the top to $30 - one guy folded one called. He had position on me. Flop came 2/2/4 with two diamonds. I bet out $20 and he called. Turn brought no over card and no diamond - bet again. He calls. River was no diamond and no help for me. I checked at this point - i figured he had to have had a flush draw. I suppose I should have bet out but I didn't. He checked and flipped over Ace/Rag of diamonds. Shortly after I was dealt 7's again! This time I didn't re-raise preflop and called the $12 or so bet. The flop was A/J/7. NICE! I ended up taking all of someones money - he held A/J. Pretty nice getting 7's within 10 minutes and both of them working out for me.

So after these two semi-rough sessions I am up $250 which adds to my bankroll a bit. I'm not thoroughly satisifed - but what can you do. I got my money in there with what I thought was the best hand and unfortunately it didn't work out. I might add that on the 2nd session I wont a decent pot ($80-$100) from the dude that beat me with the 9/10. Dude is a loose player and I look forward to taking more of his money.

Cliff notes
Don't overplay pairs 10 and under. For some reason I have this idea of isolating the play to me and one other player and for some reason just assume they have two over cards and if the flop comes rags bet it up.
After suffering a beat, stop and recooperate before re-buying. Maybe in the future when I have more discipline I won't let these types of beats effect me at all.
Start reading more strategy and learning how to read people and turning off my reads.
Learn pot odds and all of that stuff. I'm slow with math but to my understanding this is a necessity - even though I've been doing fine with out it.

its just a piece of cake, man. I had a horrendous night at my local casino this weekend. Some donk open shoved 95BB from UTG with JJ, i called with AA in BB and lost to his quads. KK vs AQo preflop 100BB all-in and got beat by trip queens. However, i was still up $80 by the end of night and left casino at 4am in the morning. In live profitable games, patience plays a huge role in your winning strategy IMO.
