Anyone ever hear of this? I was driving past a bar/restaurant that had a poker event last night so I stopped in. It's basically a poker league that you get points and the winner(s) get paid entrance into a $500 dollar event at some casino, sorry can't remember it right now.
Anyway it's called the National Pub Poker League, npplpoker dot com, and it seems to be sponsored by Green Tie Poker. There were about 20 people there last night and I ended up coming in 2nd, which I am quite proud of since I have never played poker against strangers live, usually just play with some friends.
Just wondering if anyone else is doing this.

I found out about this last year and started to play in it. I thought it might help my game. Its free and you play for points. If you win or place, you will get a free card to get into a regional at the end of the season. It progresses to the point where you will play in Vegas at the NPPL Championship. At least thats the way it was last year. I know that Hollywood Poker initially sponsored, then Mansion stepped in, and now Green Tie.
I played against more fish and donks than I would ever imagine. Yes, there are some very good players in the lot as well. You have to really play sharp. I made 12 final tables in about 3 months, and climbed the ladder but didn;t even bother to go to the regionals. It just didnt do anything for me. I got bored. I like it more when I know players are risking their own cash. I prefer the Guantlet here over that anyday, (free plug, FTR Bitches! ) as well as my area home games, online tournaments, and my fave, live play. But thats me.
Check it out and make your own eval. If it works for you, it's all good.
Big Stacks to ya!

Ive played a few times and it was alot of fun. The ones I played in in AZ gave you extra chips for each beer you drank. so I had alot of chips. And alot of fun.

I played in a few but got bored rather quickly. They're free tournaments so people play like absolute retards, so in a sense it's not "real" poker. It was okay because there were many beers involved, but my thing is if you're not playing for money (or something of great value) then why play at all?
The blinds move up way too fast (so games don't last forever), so if you're card dead they can be pretty tough.
I played in two of these events and got 2nd place out of 60 in my second tournament...When I was at the final table with eight people left I think the biggest stack had *three* big blinds, so there were two or three people that were all-in every hand which was silly.
If I found a game like mrhappy333, where you get more chips the more you drink, I could see this being a little more worthwhile. Also if the blind structures weren't retarded (they may be different in the tournaments you go to) I'd maybe give it a go for something somewhat fun to do...
