Well, I hosted my first home game. Thought I would post the details as a "real life" example of a home game. I put it together based on the resources in this site and HomePokerTournamenent.com as well as other home game experiences.

Start with the chips and cards. Another important factor is seating. Make sure you have enough table space and chairs (or people who bring chairs). I think the most important factor is to know how many players you can accommodate based on space and chip count.

Second, get your players. Send an e-mail or word of mouth. Get a count of exactly how many players you expect to attend. Let everyone know that seating is limited.

Then set up your blind structure. It depends on your preferences but you may or may not allow rebuy or add on depending on number of players and time limitations. The resources in the "stickies" will give you a pretty accurate structure for payouts and blind structure.

Think about dinner and drinks. Are you going to incur the expense or take a collection. Are you going to pay for the beer and cook or take up a collection?

We had 21 players. It started with 3 tables of 7; played down to 2 tables of 8; and a final table of 9. I used kitchen tables and folding tables and kitchen chairs and folding chairs. We did not have a "real" poker table with bumpers and drink holders.

I provided beer and soda, but other people brought some too. We collected $5 and ordered pizza for delivery at the 4th blind level. Order the food before you start playing because you don't want to mess around with that stuff while you are trying to play.

I had 1000 chips: 300 white, 200 blue, 300 red, 100 green and 100 black which is a standard 1000 chip set u can get anywhere. A friend also brought his set for extras as well as 100 or so gold chips.

Everyone started with T5000: 14 White ($25), 9 Blue $(50), 12 Red ($100), 5 Green ($200) and 4 Black ($500). The Gold was $1000 and we worked those in later as blinds went up.

$20 buy-in. No re-buy or add-on. We started at 5:30 and I planned to have everything done by midnight 5-6 hours.

The blinds increase every 30 minutes. I strongly suggest a stop-watch or kitchen timer. The blind schedule was as follows:
25/50, 50/100, 100/200(remove white chips from play), 150/300, 200/400, 250/500,(remove blue chips from play) 300/600, 400/800, 500/1000,(remove red and green chips from play) 1000/2000, 2500/5000, 5000/10000. When u remove chips round up or down but get rid of smaller chips to speed things up.

We ended at 5 minutes after midnight so it worked out perfect.

With this structure we only lost about 2 players by the dinner break 7:15/7:30. Everyone got to play for a while before the blinds really kicked in. Obviously, you can tweak the starting chips and blinds to suit your needs.
Send lawyers, guns and money - the sh*t has hit the fan!

Very nice job. I tell you. All it takes is a little preplanning like you said. I've been to games where they just make it up as they go alnog. And it is a real drag. As the host of a game. It is up to you to make sure all things go fluently as possible. You are the reason people enjoy or hate their evening. If I may, a few other suggestions.

1. Have a rule book handy. This way no one can say you're just making them up. If you have certain house rules, then add them before play starts. Poker Rules

2. As you said. Order food in advance. And try to keep the table clear of food.

3. A kitchen timer is a great tool. This way everyone can have an idea as to how long the blinds are. Another option is to have your computer monitor within eyesight or laptop, and use the free timers offered on the internet.

4. As the tables break down. Maybe have a cash game set up on the side for the people that bust out early. This way people can still play if no rebuys are allowed. (May require additional chips.)

Once again, very nice job on your successful tournament.
