A friend of mine recently went to AC for a tournament and placed ITM. But I was very surprised how much he got paid. Maybe I'm just not used to playing these type tourneys.
The buyin was $100 + $25 entry fee. There were 84 players. There was an add-on after 2 hours, where 55 people paid another $100. They paid the top 9. My friend got 6th.
How much do you think his payout would be?

Is there a semi-standard formula for anticipating how much money, and how many persons, will be paid ?

I'd say somewhere in the ball park of $1,125

$700, $800.
Half of the prize money($13,900/2 as I see it) is probably going to first place. If it's really top heavy, than a little less than 1/4 of the prize money is going to second. Then the last fourth goes to 3-9th. I'd say $700-$800 would be about right.
How much was it?

[Not quite sure why this was moved, but ok.]
My friend got $600. Luckily he only bought in one time, so still had $475 profit. Does anyone think this is skimpy?
Ensign, the winner got $5,400, so 40%.
I was going to go with them, but couldn't at the last minute. They left here at 4:00 am, arived in AC at 9:00 am and played from 10 am to 5 pm. When I found out what he got for his high-place finish, I said I wouldn't be joining them next trip. With the drive, etc, this is simply not worth it, I think.
This is not too far off of what most of you said here. But I would have guessed he would get at least $1,000. I just wondered if I was way off, because I was thinking he should have gotten more money.
Again: Is there some rough formula for knowing about how many people will be paid, and how much?

That is a horrible payout. My wife and I played a tourney in AC and she came in the money and got double the buy-in for 13th place.....$240! I think they pay too many places and spread the cash out too thin.

EasyT.
The simple answer to your question is no. Each card room/casino has their own payout structure.
To satisfy tourists, you would want a payout structure that is not top heavy and that pays several places.
To satisfy really serious card players, you would want a payout structure that is VERY top heavy.
So, you have a somewhat happy medium. As far as formulas, I think that first always gets at least 40% of the prize pool, usually more, and that second will usually get half of what first gets. Then, another 20-30% go to the people at the final table and the last 10% goes to the rest of the people. Make sense?

1: 3000
2: 1500
3: 1100
4: 1000
5: 850
6: 600
7: 400
9: 250
That is what my payout would be, I don't know if that adds up or not, but its close.
