At a home game I go to, if players get up to take a break, use the bathroom, smoke, or whatever, if that player is in the small blind or big blind, they take it from their stack and put it in play. Those players are also dealt cards and then folded and their money taken because they are away.
I noticed that there is a "missed blind" button that casinos use. I'd like to run my home game as closely to the casino just as a matter of good practice and getting used to playing right. So, what is the standard way to deal with that? I'm guessing they don't take the player's money when they walk away. Last time I was @ the casino, I don't remember them doing that. Do they put that button there when the blinds pass them and make them post upon their return? If so, is it the post price of the big blind or the big blind PLUS the small blind? Can they play as soon as they sit down or do they have to wait until the button passes or what?

Here's how "missed blind" works.
If a player misses a hand where he would not be required to post a blind, that's fine, he can come back and play the next hand and doesn't have to post unless he is now in the blind.
If a player is not at the table when he is required to post a blind, the dealer will throw the button out to his spot. Then, when he comes back, the player has to post any blinds that he missed or sit out until the big blind.
So let's say the blinds are $4 and $8. If the player misses the small and big blinds, he has to post $12 to play when he comes back (the $4 becomes dead money in the pot), or wait until the big blind comes back around and he can post $8.

OK, let's amend. If you become as good a poker player as Doyle Brunson or Phil Ivey or Mike Matusow, go ahead and straddle.

Straddling UTG > Posting UTG if you feel that waiting a hand is too nitty.
Getting to act last and the possibility of getting other players to straddle more than makes up for the extra cost.
