I don't know what it is about min raises but I hate them.

I want to punish the people who min raise by playing any 2 cards, running them down and making them pay for their stupid min raise.

Any thoughts on the psychology of the min raise and why people do it?

I think you answered your own question - it simply tilts some players into playing for stacks...

Min-raising wouldn't be so bad if it was done, say - when folded to on the button. But when you've got 5 limpers and the big blind min-raises... yes, that makes me want to punch myself.

For the most part min-raising is a very bad move..but there are times when this move could work for you....oh and SGTChuck...be advised that in a middle of a tourney or SnG...fishy type players use min-raises when they have a monster to "build the pot" ...so next time you see a min-raise dont automatically assume its a crappy hand....

In my experience, a min-raise is sometimes a subsconcious bet masking a monster hand. A min-raise is not a real bet and it shouldn't run anyone off. The only real point is to commit everyone to donating and building the pot and pot odds for later.

I've seen sooooo many hands where a player hit trips on the flop or a straight and made a min-raise. I don't believe this as a rule, but I'm VERY CAUTIOUS when a min-raise comes out.

I can't stand the min-raise, particularly the min-check raise. A lot of weak players do it and at the absolute wrong times.

At the same time, I try to use it every now and then to vary my play. Particularly if you rarely use it, if the worst you do is bet 3x the pot, and you make a min bet suddenly, loose players really get confused. I do this on the button with AA and get K9 on the SB to raise and the BB Q10 to push, then I and the SB call. It just works at that right moment.
Mr Inconsistency....that is moi!!!!!

i min-re-raise a lot of flops. And take down a lot of 20bb pots doing so. This is a good return on my iso-44 on an AT7 flop...
thanks min-raises.

oh, c'mon guys. minraises arent that difficult to deal with.

on dry boards, they are bluffs or something that is trying to get TP into a war.

on rivers, they are for value.

pf, they indicate a dumbass.

and, most importantly, they LAY great odds for you to continue. implied or otherwise.
LHE is a game where your skill keeps you breakeven until you hit your rush of random BS.

Nothing beats flopping quads while dropping a duece!

yah for sure.. preflop they let ya know he's a dumbass... mark him down in notes immed. lol.
I've had times where I've allowed the min. raisers preflp get to me but I am often my own worst enemy on the table. Fuck em.. forget about it. stay patient. does seem pretty ridiculous at times though huh. Played one today,.. 5limpers.. bb minraises??.. why??.. then folds to first c-bet on ragged flop from sb.. lol. retarded

Well there was one hand yesterday where I minned post-flop all the way to the river because I felt it was the most I was going to get out of my hand headsup. he ended up calling me down with bottom pair....

Obligatory HU4ROLLZ challenge and I promise to min-raise every time I have the button!

Min-raising preflop from late position is good if the blinds are bad, tight players. It encourages them to play horrible cards out of position and they'll lose money after the flop.

I don't mind a minraise in certain situations, but whoever said with 5 limpers and bb minraises, yea thats a pretty easy way to get me to throw my laptop at the wall, cuz then one of the limpers goes into the tank for all of 5 minutes and then finally folds, so all it does is make me anxious and in a bad mindset to play poker. Good strategy lol. Might have to try it some time.

I agree, for all that everyone has posted. Especially when I have it. Poker is War. Min raise you CRAZY and I felt you. Especially when I have a maniac at the table whose gonna re-raise huge anyway. It really all depends. You cannot underestimte the tilt factor on the 5 limpers, then min raise scenario. Situation can temporarily tilt even the best.
Peace,
FLOW
