K, I played my first (imo) high-stakes cash game last night at the local cardroom. Great fun, so much better than online! Problem is... I have nowhere near the bankroll to continue with it's crazy variance.

Minimum NLHE is $2/5, $100 max buy-in. Rake is 10%, maxed at $5 + $1 for jackpot. So, rake is def. beatable as hands frequently reach $100-ish, and big pots are 300. Saw one for just under 900!

Anyways, as you can probably imagine from the game's structure, most of these players come planning to throw a few buy-ins trying to catch a good pot. My problem is that I am a bit underrolled... I currently have about 4 buy-ins set aside for live play, and it's definitely conceivable to lose a good chunk of that just due to a bit of the downside of variance.

So, my question is this: do I keep playing super-tag poker, trying to build a roll through this game? I really enjoy it, and came out $50 ahead last night... though at one point was up $200. There were enough showdowns last night that I got to see a lot of what these players really play with, so that was good. I feel as though playing solid TAGG would mop the floor with this place, but variance could eat me alive in just a few hands.

I went last week and came in 4th in their $70, 60-player tourney, again just playing TAGG. That's my other potential plan... play their tourney once every week or two. They've also got a $30 tourney, but only 30 players. I could play both and keep a pretty decent upside potential, while minimizing my weekly downside to $100+expenses.

I know it may be sacrilegious to most, but I'm quickly losing interest in online poker for the live game, but to do so I gotta raise the stakes quite a bit. I'd like to keep the play to my bankroll, but can fund it from my paycheck a bit too if necessary. But I'd love to have other players thoughts on the best way to minimize my risk in this situation, while building a bankroll, and being able to comfortably play at the cardroom on a pretty regular basis. :P Thanks.

ChezJ is an unknown quantity at this point
variance is a f'ing bitch. don't play outside your BR, you will regret it.

i have a local underground cardroom too and it is so much more tempting to play there than to drive 3.5 hours to atlantic city. but the buy-in at the cardroom is $300 ($1/$3 NL) and i just don't have enough BR in cash to bring 3-4 buy-ins to a game. i went once and got bad beated (boat vs boat) for my whole stack after making $100, and that prevented me from even playing in home games for a long time. i eventually won back the money in my home game and returned to the cardroom, only to get destacked for two buy-ins.

variance cannot be avoided. learn from my mistake... just don't do it.

Don't play under rolled, no matter what your reason is. You could be the best player in the world but if your under rolled, even playing tight poker, you will still go busto.

And $6 rake?? Wow that is a lot. Rake adds up, especially live since its customary to tip. Plus I don't trust illegal poker rooms because most take a little extra from pots than they are suppose to.

$6 rake + tip is going to be hard to beat in the long run but if your playing with like 4 or so buyins, their will never be a long run.
