Today i am going to investigate and discuss the idea of the home game or "friendly" game when the player is still being raked.
Now, I am positive that we have all played in a friends game where everyone buys in for anywhere from 5 dollars to 5000 (depending whether you are a gas station attendant or lawyer).
These games never have a rake and always have drunk people. Sometimes it's the price you pay for not paying, if you get what I mean. These games are normally nice and only a small group of friends playing. I will rate each type of game on a 10 scale and everyone will see why no matter what, casino play tops all else. All comments and oppinions welcome.
Friendly home game- Safety;9-1/2, Environment-6-1/2, Money making - 4
Local big rake card rooms are the way of the mob and people who really like money and see the fish just swimming around them. These games normally have a rake of 10% with a max of 3-7 BB. Depending on what state you are in, they are run either buy local members or sometimes charity groups and etc. If they are run by an organization then they are normally pretty safe, but if they are run by just one person trying to get paid, safety goes out the window. Not to mention the fact that you are always trying to beat the huge rake. In a 1-2 game with a max rake of 10 dollars, the house can easily make over 2000 dollars in one night with just one full table and some money on it. The only positives to this game is the fact that they normally have free food and drinks, the dumbest players, and a decent environment. My biggest worry with these games is that they are the easiest to cheat, and more likely to get robbed than any other game.
Safety (9 organized & 3-1/2 local room) Environment-7-1/2; Money Making-7
Now for the Grand Poobah of them all. Casinos. Casinos get a 10 in every department. Security everywhere for safety from people. Pit bosses for safety from cheats. The biggest and most fun fish around. People come in knowing they are going there to lose money, what better can you ask for if you are a successful poker player. Small rake because there are so many tables that the casino makes their money no matter what. It is just so much better to take the small drive to your local casino, and play poker there. If you don't have a local casino, you should really talk to your government officials, city and state, because casinos bring jobs, opportunity and large amounts of tax revenue. Well, this is my long blog for the day, any people have any comments or questions just shoot me a post.

There is only one thing that matters, and that is the fish factor. Yes, you can have fish in a home game, but over time that home game will get tighter and tighter as the fish lose all their money and stop coming back. Also, the good players learn your patterns and start playing back at you harder. Unless you have some kind of regular mechanism for bringing new fish to the game, it is ultimately doomed to become a rock garden. Same with underground cardrooms, they are full of regulars who are just nits, at least in my experience.
Casinos are a totally different story. The fish come in from the blackjack tables and the ponies room. They have no clue what they are doing. When they blow out, they are replaced by more clueless gamboolers. Despite the rake, the EV is way higher at a casino. Plus, the stakes are generally higher at the casino. E.g., my home game is only $1/$2 limit but it plays like a $10/$20 game at the casino. As long as you have the bankroll, you can walk into the casino and make way more than you can in a home game. Are there $10/$20 home games? Sure, but do you really feel safe playing at a guy's house with no security and $5,000 in the kitty?

Well I have actually had a topic on myself opening a poker lounge on here for a while.. Who's to say that there cant be security to keep it safe? And who's to say it cant be popular enough to have tourists coming there to play? so you have those ongoing nits? Everything that goes on in a casino is possible at a local PROFESSIONAL poker lounge...

It's odd how new casinos can effect a market. A new larger casino opened in my area that already had about a handful of established smaller casinos. As a result, a couple of the small ones dropped poker and are doing only gaming. One casino decided to hold more tourneys, and one has closed their poker room on Mon-Tues. The new one, which originally had no tourneys and just cash games, has now started holding tourneys.
It's game theory between the casinos.

I don't know enough people who casually toss around hundred dollar bills to make playing outside of a public card room worth it.
