I don't want to call anyone out or risk getting them (or myself) noticed for this, but is there anyone who'd like to comment on their experiences playing in illegal card rooms?

I regularly go to a number of poker clubs in NYC. It's very similar to playing in a casino... Time is always charged instead of a rake ($4 every half hour). These clubs have operated fairly openly for quite a while. Many of the people who go there are businessmen, etc., not that many shady characters. (I see Robert Iler, the guy who plays AJ on the Sopranos at a table several times a week). The club I go to most spreads exclusively NL hold em with $1/$2 blinds, $5/$5 blinds, and occasionally $5/10 or $10/$25 blinds.

I went to a $2-4 pot limit hold'em game a few times in fort worth, it was in the backroom of a cabinetry business.
There was no rake or entrance fee, but the dealers expected tips. This chick I knew was a dealer there, and she said she'd make anywhere from 100-300 a night in tips.
Best tip for a cardroom i'd say is, don't be intimidated by the big stacks. They'll try to bully you around so expect it.
But anyway, you'll spot the pros from the producers very quickly. As the saying goes, if you can't spot the sucker, you are the sucker.

i've played a couple times in the 'bartenders' game in washington, which seems to rotate among various bars after they are closed for business. they take a time charge of $3/hr and offer free drinks but no dealer. we just deal to each other, using bicycle cards and common chips. it would be so easy to get the same chips off ebay and slip them into the game. but otherwise they are pretty cautious, not letting spectators in and keeping the front door locked until someone calls to get access.
my friend told me about a game outside the city that is literally underground at an abandoned service station in an industrial park with a security camera at the front door, just like something out of rounders. he said it was a shithole inside but tons of seedy looking players were there grinding it out at 2 a.m. on a tuesday.

just go play in them..especially if you know someone there. I wouldnt show up somewhere new with no one else though. Kinda risky. Also if these places do get busted it is mostly just the people that are puttin it on that get in trouble..if anyone at all.

until last august there were a couple of well known cardroom operations run out people's houses in the d.c. suburbs. one of them marketed themselves pretty aggressively, sending out 2 emails a week to a huge list of people offering nightly high hand bonuses, $25 bonuses for bringing new players, and even pickup service from the metro for those who are carless. but one of them got raided by the police and the couple in charge were put in the slammer. all others present were slapped with misdemeanor charges and their money was confiscated, even if they weren't playing. so the other one shut down voluntarily. the one that got busted was reportedly raking $40,000 a month!

Lightweight or not, see how your brother would do against a mobster's .357 or a cop's taser.

Nothing. Perfectly legal in most (if not all) states.

I dont really see anything that should be illegal about raked home games. It's just pretty shitty to invite people to your house then take a rake!

my question was directed at boostNslide, who said he wanted to find an illegal game since he's too young to play at a casino. home games with no rake are a much better alternative.

In my experience, the card rooms in the Dallas area are pretty stringent about keeping under-age players out. Every one I've been to has carded me; my understanding is that they get in more trouble with the cops and TABC (the state regulatory body regarding alcohol sales, etc) about under-age people being present when they're giving away beer than they do over the actual game.

Sorry to revive an old post, but I only know of one underground cardroom in the Dallas area, PC's. What else is around there?
