Ok, this is what I know about the tournament so far:

Buyin
: 20 dollars
Blinds: Low for 1 hr, then they raise every 15 minutes from their.
Number of people: 40-50

What i know about poker:

I have good knowledge, have read caro's book of tells, The theory of poker by david sklansky, and have been around many poker forums and LOWER SIZEd home games before. But, i don't know how much all this will help me succeed in a larger home game such as this.

What i would like from you:
How should i play, what types of things should i do when i first sit down(example: play cautiously until i can read the players)? When should i be agressive? Early when the blinds are low, or later one, when i have higher risk? I am new to this larger sized home game, and I think i am skilled enough to win, i just need some help strategy wise to keep myself in it, until i get comfortable with the people left and can take it from there.

Sorry if it sounds so confusing, but to sum it up, how can i play, what can i do, to improve my chances of winning a large home tourney like this?

Basically I can tell you how I would play it, I would play my normal tight aggressive style, but when I’m not in hands I would watch the everyone, read the players, when I am in the hand, in tourneys like that one you're referring too, you want to get a good size stack if all possible in the first hour so your not constantly trying to beat the chip race (blinds going up) just play your a game always and don't be scared to fold hands that are marginal early on, it's a hell lot harder to come back from the short stack and win then it is the chip lead going in to the final table and coming back to win. If you know what I mean, I would rather have some leeway at the final table then be the one on the short stack everyone is bulling trying to get out first. Last thing then I’ll turn it over to the next person, don’t be tense and don’t play scared. If you play that way you’ll get eaten alive. Good luck.

Ok, i'll make sure to do that. I think i really need that early edge and boost of confidence to keep me from falling into the "scared mode" where i am wayyy to tight. I will be sure to keep this stuff in mind.

Anybody else, i really need all the advice i can get on this. Dont want to put the money in the tournament as a donation if you know what i mean

Thanks

Don't play draws, unless its something like an A10-Q suited which is not really a total draw.

Don't bluff too much.

Play cards and position. Early on when blinds are low, you can be loose and limp in w/ that 10,9suited and hope to hit a huge hand cheap.

If you last until late and blinds go up significantly, you have to start stealing some blinds.

Don't get trapped but trap others (you got to do this one on your own, can't really be written down).

Chip position is everything but be patient. Don't get desperate if your stack starts to get a little low. If you have less than 3 blinds you are in "move in mode." Otherwise be patient and wait for a good hand to make a stand.

I hope you have good short-handed skills. You will need them in the end.

In all reality. It's only $20 bucks. Why play scared at all? Tight aggressive will serve you well early. And later you can open it up a bit after people get a feel for your tight play.
