My best friend comes to play poker every week at my house, and he has a stone cold poker face. Fortunitally for me he is a Fish and only plays his hand.

He has 3 positions that he holds for 5-10 minutes each.

1. Slouching in chair
2. Hands folded on table and sitting up
3. Hand up at his mouth looking like he is pondering

One tell I have on him is if mid bet he goes to a slouch he has a monster and I get out. But other then that, he just plain doesn't move. Except for his eyes.

I have noticed if he looks at my chips and then the cards conintinuesly he is bluffing 4/5 times (been caught with a full house on that one though). But mainly, his eyes move around so much it is hard to even tell what he is looking at.

What else should I be looking for in a guy who doesn't move besides betting patterns? Breathing possibly? Feet moving :P ?

Any help would be much appreciated!

Tells should be your final source of information in a hand.

You're putting too much emphasis on his tells, you should be paying attention to his betting patterns and your mechanics.

He plays very loose, and pretty much only calls. A few raises, but they seem to be split between bluffs and good hands. He plays most hands to the end which means I can trap him, but isn't afraid to get out (just not as often).

Would it be a good idea this week to just avoid him unless I get a monster? And try to get some sort of read on his betting habits?

Isnt he just tryin to read youre tells?

with that Full house he might just have been foolin you arround. I normally try to act a specific way in a small put which I most certainly loose. later on the evenin I try acting the same on a big pot I most certainly I cant lose

isnt he trying the same?

Possibly I am not giving him enough credit. However I can trap him in much larger pots then the one he got me with a full house. Often he will call the river, turn over his cards and say "I got nothin." Either he is a very unpredictable player, or extremely intelligent for throwing me off. But the past two times I have played with him he has had to re-buy in so I would say he is unpredictable.

This week I will pay much more attention to playing styles rather than tells. I belive you are absolutly correct that I am placing too much emphasis on them. Thanks for the tip!

When In doubt I always look for the size of my opponent stack, players with big stacks or players with ery small stacks are more likely to make aggresive move on a medium hand

If you can get a copy of the march 21 ed. of Poker Player there is in interesting article about how watching what direction the player's eyes are looking can give us a clue about what they are thinking.

The author suggests that when looking at the initial flop or at their whole cards what way the glance can tell a lot. Upand Left and the person is drawing from his/her visual memory. What cards in the past have they seen or what is in their hand.

Up and Right and they are visualizing something they haven't seen before. Bluff or wishful thinking that the perfect card will hit them on the next street.

If your guy is fishy and you catch him looking up and left he may have caught something. Still looking right and he is still hoping to catch something. Don't know how true it is. I've caught my self doing exactly what he mentioned thought. More then anything else its made me more aware of what I do at the table.

And you can watch his hands when he bets. Supposedly, you can often tell the difference between a bluff and a real hand with his hand motions when putting chips in the pot.

Something about a slight extra flourish on the bluff or something? I haven't seen it yet.

If a player stares at the board for a long time it often means that he missed. Obviously many players know this so they'll do it when they hit too as reverse psychology.

I've noticed that if a player glances at his stack as the flop comes out, he made a hand and is thinking strongly about betting, even if his sense gets the better of him and he slowplays it.

Other than that, looking up and to the right implies he's thinking creatively, eaither bluffing or hoping for that perfect card, as mentioned above.

Another I've noticed, but doesn't always hold true, is that newer players tend to completely freeze up and stare down a caller when they have that monster hand. I suppose they're trying not to giver anything away with their body language....
