Hey, I was just at a B&M poker room and one of the dealers was very talkative, telling us how much being a dealer paid, how much he enjoyed it, etc.
So that made me think...how the heck do you become a dealer?

Ask questions, every place has different hiring standards.
Next time your there, ask one of the managers how to apply.

here in Louisiana you have to goto dealers school, unless you already know how to take rakes and how to handle situations properly, other than that it is pretty easy to become a dealer.Got to pass the drug test and evaluations the poker room supervisors give you.I dont know how it is at other places.
here the most simple thing in the test is like. divide 2 into 30 or shyt like that

You need to go to dealer school or be trained by someone, but dealer school is your best bet. You get alot of time to practice dealing to people and get comfotable dealing before you have to audition. First impressions are everything in this business.
I deal professionally in Las Vegas, and just dealt the 2005 WSOP.

It really varies greatly.
Just like any other service industry job, I rely on tips for the majority of my income. Some days are good, some aren't.
Average is about $150 per 8 hour shift, depending on the room, limits, and players. I have made more, and I have made less.

$20 an hour to learn/get a better feel for the game seems pretty good to me.

But then again a good player makes more then that. It enjoy dealing the odd home game, and I know how to do everything including rake. But, besides that odd game, I don't think I'd want to do it all the time.
