1st time using this forum. been an online player for some time and am used to all the tracking tools that you have to analyze your play. im thinking about playing more live poker to mix things up but i dont want to lose the ability to track my play. is there a good way to keep track of your statistics when playing at a table? would love to get some thoughts on how to do this and what methods people use.

I had a similar idea more along the lines of tracking villains' play, but everyone laughed at me. I think the technology exists to make something like this, but I don't think anything like it currently exists. Outside of a good memory or just jotting things down into a notebook or small hand held, that's about all you can do. And, the downside of obviously taking notes is that it really bleeds away your edge because now you've let the cat out of the bag by letting players know you're paying attention. I think the value of them NOT knowing you're paying attention or even a good player is more important than the notes you'll keep. If you play a home game or casino game with a lot of regulars, you could just focus on one player each time taking detailed mental notes and then offloading them. Or, take generic notes on everyone and offload those, too. If you're just focusing on yourself, you could do the same thing by mentally logging JUST one or two stats OR several generic ones or highlight hands.

i looked through your post and responses and i think were on the same page for this one. its not about tracking players for how you play them at the moment its keeping track of whether youre making good decisions over long periods of time. i can track whether im winning enough off of rockits when i look at my numbers online but if i shift my game to live im worried about losing the ability to track good and bad habits. i mmight go on tilt without realizing and start dropping profit over long term.

It's 8 or 9 people with very different looks and postures. If you can't keep track and figure things out within a couple orbits maybe poker isn't for you. I don't think you need to spend anytime trying to remember people from previous sessions. I think most live players at the smaller stakes are prety much one of three or four subgroups.
You figure out the groups.

I would love to have the type of online stats for me and others in live, but you can't, if you ndid everyone could and the whole game would be different. I believe stats players (Jym?) tend to be easier to beat live 9 Caros Law of loose wiring undoes their analysis i think).
Live poker adds to the different nature on a daily basis player by player, and brings tells into the game. I've seen rocks play much higher variation day-to-day in live than they would in online as an example.
Not trcaking stats doesn't mean you don't belong in poker, that's ridiculous. Conversely I would suggest that if you depend on stats tracking for your live that you will get eaten alive by the good instintual palyers.
But teh stats in live games are far less relevant han online ( Caro's Law of Loose Wiring explains). Basically with all the goings on, personal affrontages, personalisation of bad beats etc... live is far more emotional and thus more whimsical depending on people, weather, etc...
Thats my two bob worth, put into the big blind.

Lol @ this thread.
I haven't met a live 1/2 player (small sample) who's capable of thinking above the 1st level (i.e. what might I have).
Thus, I agree with Jyms 100%

I used to play live, but after relocating I needed to start playing online, it did take me a while to readjust. A lot of online players seem to LOVE to call and play almost every hand they can. If you know what you're doing you can use that to your advantage.

Perhaps a spreadsheet could help, in which you´d put the amounts of interest for live playing... Dunno!

I am not sure tracking live play is really feasible either.
I generally hang back for a while (up to an hour) to get a feel for the other players.
Then I just start playing situational poker.
As far as tracking my own performance, I try to keep a few mental notes to jot down in a pocket dayplanner I use for this purpose, but I usually do not do this during play because I would like the other players to not know I am paying that much attention.

I'm debating (note: re-read DEBATING) creating a spreadsheet that will cover my live tournament success, using the summary information you can get from online. (# entrants, buy-in, cash-out, fees, place of finish, and even time of start and finish) and everything that you can piece together from those. I'm a stat-whore and would love to be able to plot my hourly wage playing poker lol. (Again, debating, because this would involve some meticulous BS, but I think I've got what it takes haha.)

I know a few that play $1/$2 because they have a much bigger advantage over the players at the $2/$5 game where I play. That being said, most of the $1/$2 players stare at the Bad Beat sign more than they do the cards hoping for their jackpot... ($2/$5 not eligible).
Back to the OP. I try to make notes once I get home after the session. Win/Loss, hours played, big hands I remember, and some player notes (lots of regulars). Usually just track in Excel, but I've seen a few guys make notes at the table.
