I recently played a game with a very aggressive player. He likes announcing his cards. Sometimes he's bluffing sometimes he's not. It got annoying. I played him but he didn't win against another buddy that was playing tight. But he did beat me and I'm normally the one winning.

How do I deal with aggressive players?

First, tell him that announcing his cards is illegal in play, whether they are his own or not. (Can someone else verify this? I sure thought it was, even if it isnt tell him and he may stop). Or i guess if he tells you and you have him beat then call him based on what he says. It sounds like he knows your weakness in that he knows when you are confident about your hand...may need some fixing on that one.


You may also try:

1) switch games where he (or any aggressive person) is not there - not recommended

or

2) wait until you have the nuts and take him for everything (pretty hard and may take a while) - not recommended

or

3) get fed up with him and if/when you sense a weakness exploit it by forcing him to make a decision (re-raising all-in with a decent hand) - semi-recommended

or

4) talk some trash back, whenever you win a hand let him know you are the best and you play the best and when you lose its their fault for playing stupid (think phil helmuth) - might work...

or

5) try a limit game, that will stop his aggressiveness (preference, unlikely you will do this)

or

6) Insert random comment here.

Mostly you have to stand up for yourself and believe in the style that you play, dont be afraid to call/raise him if for a second you think he has junk. And yes you may have to defend your stack, don't play if you werent willing to risk all your chips when you have the best hand.

I think your best defense against an agressive player is to play tight preflop and show down with medium strength hands. You won't win as many pots as he does, so make sure your pots are big and his pots are small.

Don't lay down Top Pair solid kicker to this guy, even on a scary board. If he got lucky and caught a flush or trips or something, oh well.

Also, how does he re-act to a reraise? If you think he's bluffing, don't just call, re-raise him 3 times his original bet, even if you have nothing. But be careful, if he is a true maniac he may re-raise all-in. Or, if hes a poor player he may just call down to the river and still end up beating you. You'll have to maybe try this one or two times and see how he reacts.

if he is tight there is not much to do but only play premium hands, but if he plays many hands and win often,he is probably bluffing you alot, i know the type exactly. they might be lucky in the short run, but in the long run when they come across a better player will loose it all, what you can do about this sort of player is to trap them with a big pair or trips or something. and take advantage by he's aggressive style and let hem bet right into your pocket aces by just calling and checking(do not raise) (slowplay) make he'm bet the pot really big, then if you are real sure to win at the river and there is no flush or straight draw, go all-in on he'm, then somethimes they go on tilt and call you. i did that to a guy last week, he was so mad at me, typing all sort of swear in the chat, lol , then he left the table, he knew he had ben outplayed

Fnord's got it right. Call him down a lot with hands you would usually bet. Let him put his own chips in your stack. And do a lot of check/call, check/raise moves with monsters. i.e. You flop two pair or better, and from the board it looks to be the best hand out there? Check/call him on the flop, check/raise him on the turn. Mr. Aggressive will eventually string himself up trying to bet you out of pots.

Watch him a few hands you will see the pattern of his play develop hope some one else call him down a couple times so you can see his cards. We all know that online it is very difficult to have 3-4 premium hands in a row.

I call/check a lot if iI got the premiums loose a couple on purpose then nail the dude when I get a monster they usually get out of chips fast once you get them figured out.

i have met this knind of player in captaincookspoker NL 0.5$/1$
that was my first time play poker

most of the time i was waitting,and watching him.
waitting the chance to beat him.
finnaly i win 140$ in one hand from him.
i think the best choice is waitting .
if u can afford the lost ,you can try with AK or KK QQ to beat him

or u should leave the table and play with others

2. check call a monster and push hard on the river.
